Edelbrock 1406 Fuel leak

Sorry for the delay, I have been working everyday since my last post. Definitely will have some time tomorrow to work on the truck.

I’ll recheck the plugs (and clean if necessary) beforehand.

Dumb question but should I work the throttle linkage to open the primary throttle blades when adding fuel or should I add fuel with the throttle closed?

Going to pull the carb to rebuild/clean it if Ricko1966’s suggestion doesn’t resolve the issue. I already have the kit and found a quality step by step video to walk me through it. Even if it’s just a diagnostic tool to rule it out.

Also, I did check that the distributor hold down bolt was still tight.

Still just cranking; not even trying to turn over. Probably did 5-7 twenty second volleys. Prior to trying it again, I:

-confirmed the distributor hold down bolt was tight
-removed all 8 plugs and cleaned them again (some were wet but better than last time)
-confirmed plug wires were in correct order
-used canned 92 octane fuel
-ensured battery was fully charged
-verified that all ports in use are correctly hooked up
-ensure the fuel line was pinched off

It is also 28 degrees here which I’m sure isn’t helping. Any more suggestions? Curt suggested replacing my ignition control module which is a cheap and easy thing to rule out...

Have you checked for spark to the plugs clamp a plug in a jumper cable. Ground the other end of the jumper cable. Pull 1 plug wi re off a plug put it on the jumper cable plug and crank.watch for spark. And 7 seconds isn't much crank time try longer intervals.

I confirmed that I have spark to the #1 cylinder via an in-line spark tester. I suppose this method wouldn’t rule out a bad plug(s)though?

To clarify, I cranked it for 20 seconds & waited a minute before cranking again for 20 seconds. I followed this sequence 5-7 times. So several minutes of cranking broke up into 20 second intervals.

Bought new plugs. Will gap and change them tonight. Have to wait until tomorrow to try it again-baby is sleeping.

Should I do everything else the same, fuel line pinched off, choke open, tablespoon of fuel down each primary, 1/2 throttle and crank for 20 seconds?

Gapped and changed spark plugs...still just cranking. I went ahead and checked all of my fuses and changed the ones that I had not already changed since buying the truck. Still nothing.

Ordered a new ignition control module, it will be here tomorrow. After that, idk what else to try.

If you have spark than you don't need an ignition module. Check for spark again . this does not make any sense. It ran when you parked it? You didn't do any work after you parked it? You pinched off tank fuel and provided fresh fuel through the carburetor throat? It has spark?You never moved the distributor?

I drove this truck 2500 miles between March 2020 and November 2020. I last started the truck in early December. I let it run in my driveway until it got up to temp (approximately 20 minutes) at that time. Fresh 92 octane without ethanol from a can. Fuel line is pinched off with hose pinch pliers. I just verified on cylinder 2 that the inline spark tester was illuminating while cranking.

Immediately prior to parking the truck for the season, I changed the passenger fuel tank sending unit and fuel tank selector valve. The valve had an internal short causing the fuel gauge to read incorrectly when the switch was thrown to the passenger side tank. Prior to changing the sending unit, I drained the tank completely. There was zero rust or varnish in the tank. The truck ran off of both tanks for approximately 10 minutes prior to being stored for the winter. Since parking the truck in early December, I changed a leaking hydroboost seal, and changed the oil and oil filter. I also rotated the tires and checked the front brake pads.

I have not touched the distributor and confirmed that the hold down bolt is tight. I ensured the plugs were secured to the cap (also new in 2020, approximately 1000miles on it) and that the plugs were in the correct firing order. I changed the plugs this morning. None of this had been messed with between parking the truck and the start of this thread. We live in the suburbs so we don't get mice.

How often should I be adding the table spoon of gas? After each 20 second cranking period?

Total timing is set at 34 degrees. Idle timing is set at 16 degrees BTDC. Has always fired right up after pumping the gas 3 times.

Don't add gas every time just the first time and then again if it fires. Check for spark with a plug and a jumper cable

Tested spark using the method you prescribed on cylinder 2 since I have factory AC which makes the #1 plug harder to get to.

As you know, I am no expert but the spark seemed weak and irregular. Its difficult to make out, orange in color and only fired 11 times in 20 seconds. During that 20 second time frame, it did not appear to fire at all for approximately 9 seconds.

I recorded a video but cannot upload it due to it being too large. I can email it to you if that is an option?

Sorry I am, have been and will be stupid busy until Monday night. Sounds like the ignition needs some attention, first check for a tight connection and 12v at the cap. Take the cap off inspect the rotor and cap visually.There is a lot more to HEI than just a module but I guess if you already ordered it try it. Then if it still doesn't start do some research on how to test HEI.
