Don't really know where to put this, but have any of y'all ever had to get a bonded title, and how big of a pain is it?

I've never gotten one before, but it seems like a pretty straightforward process in Texas. It will just cost you some money and a bit of time, but you just need to show proof of ownership like a bill of sale. I generally won't buy a vehicle without a title, because it is just a much bigger pain in the neck. I just recently bought a 67 Buick Riviera without a signed title, but I had a signed lost title application from the currently registered owner and a bill of sale from all the people that it had changed hands through. I was able to take the signed lost title application and the chain of bills of sale into the DMV and get a title in my name that way.

Submit request, then get bond then get title. Straight forward in Texas except sometimes wait time can be long. And they even charge a fine for not registering on time if the wait time is longer than a month

The procedure differs by state.
I had to do it in Arizona.
Is a major PITA.
Cost me about $500.
You have to do a lot of paperwork and write letters to previous owners and get responses back from them notarized describe the situation of why there is no title.
Then when you get all your documentation and you pay your fee the vehicle is submitted to an extensive inspection which takes a couple hours.
They look at all the hidden VIN numbers over the whole vehicle.
I suggest to anyone, never buy a vehicle without a clean title.

Texas is straight forward as stated above. I have done it twice in the past 5 years. Not expensive and didn't take a lot of time. YMMV depending on local office.

I have never done a bonded title, but have done a few abandoned vehicle titles here in AZ, and those took anywhere from 6 months to a year.
Once, I bought a 49 Pontiac from an old lady and when I went to get title and registration, MVD said there were two cars with the same VIN in the system and I could not get title/registration until they figured it out.
It took over 9 months.
There is a department in our MVD called "trouble and suspense" and that department is VERY aptly named.
I ended up being on a first name basis with many of the workers there.

I live in SC and this state's DMV are title nazis. I tried to buy my Blazer in Texas with a bonded title because the title was signed in the wrong place by a previous owner. It seemed to be easy at first, but THEN Texas wanted a bill of sale from the PO which was USELESS, because myself and the seller had NO idea where he was after two months of searching. Had we known where he was we could have simply gotten a duplicate title from him. Ridiculous.
I got tired of all the junk, so I printed up a BOS, a mileage confirmation document, and a registration form from the Vermont DMV (all signed by the seller). I sent this to them along with proof of insurance, a printed NADA value document, and a money order for the sales taxes and registration fees. Two weeks later I received in the mail two Vermont licence tags and a temporary registration. Two more weeks and I received the permanent registration. Vermont does not title vehicles older than 15 years old so MOST states will accept this registration as a title and issue you one. Vermont does not care if you do not live there, or that the vehicle has no title. As long as the vehicle is not stolen or liened, Vermont will register it, all by mail. Check with the Texas DMV before attempting this though. I thought that you might want to know about this in case you have to register it some of their way.

In Colorado it is a PITA. My car was a BMW 2002 Tii that was partially restored and my customer brought it to me to finish, then he stopped paying. Turns out, he didn't own it and had no paperwork (He had vanished by then) I had to put ads in the paper to find last owner, who I could never track down, Then I had to take ownership through all sorts of "rig a marole" Finally got ownership after about a year of effort. Finished the car and sold it..

Some states are more complex than others, as long as the VIN doesn't show up on a stolen list, you should be able to claim ownership eventually. In some states there is a "protest period." During this time other people can challenge you in court and try to claim ownership as well. If no one disputes your claim of ownership, or you win your court case against someone who does, you will be given a title.

Thanks to all that have replied. I actually had a title that I surendered when applying for one in my name, but the state is saying that "it might possibly not be the most current one." This is on top of them inccorectly entering information into the computer when I initially applied......in July.

Got one on mine now in Texas. Got a form took it to my state farm agent. She did the paperwork and I payed 100 bucks and clear blue Texas title came in mail not too long after. Easy fir me.

What year is the vehicle what state are you in,and why do you think you need to get a bonded title. I have jumped lots of title hurdles that's why all the questions.
