1986 GMC sierra classic 1500 SWB 4x4
305” on a 700r4

I have bypassed the ESC & removed it. I also bought a new distributor.

My question is;

“Did I buy the wrong new distributor?”

is there a difference between an ESC distributor and non-ESC distributor?

I know i can just jump the two wires that I connected on the other distributor, but one less jury rigged thing, would be nice.

My new distributor has the vacuum advance canister on the side. I took it out of the box so I don’t think I can easily return it, but if there is another distributor that would be more proper, I might just try and exchange it.

How will pictures help?

I bought the distributor that goes to a 1986 GMC with a 305, from the store.

there weren’t options.

My question refered to whether I should’ve purchased an older distributor that has different wiring. One that go to a truck without ESC.

…and if so, which one is that. As in, what year(s)?

Just bought a new distributor from OReilly that I modified for a pre-oiler. So, have new cap and rotor if you need one. I am over here on East Mackey Lake.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what does pre-oiler, mean?
Prior to starting a new/rebuilt engine, oil needs to be circulated under pressure to ensure you are getting flow through the system. Typically, a pressurized oil tank attached to a port, or a tool is used to spin the oil pump to circulate the oil until you have pressure and a visual of oil coming up through the pushrods. The tool I was using initially to spin the oil pump did not appear to have the correct lower profile to ensure I had flow. Once I got the new distributor and modified it to spin with my drill, I got the flow confirmation.

I’m not sure I understand.

Did they, luckily, give me the wrong distributor?

there were no options.

1986 there was definitely an ESC, which I had, until I removed it.

weird…

The vacuum canister on the new distributor, is much bigger and it hits (what I assume is) the engine lift loop bracket.

lol… The tragic part is that it only hits the bracket at exactly 4°.

I guess I’ll just have to remove the bracket. I thought about just bending it down, but that’s a pretty thick bracket and I don’t want to pull that hard on an intake manifold bolt.

I don’t know if the bolt is longer to a accommodate the bracket or not, but I suppose if it is, I can just use a fat washer to take up the space.

i’m still a little tripped out that they accidentally gave me the wrong distributor, which is the one I needed. Lol…
