Diesel engine ideas

Im trying to figure out a diesel engine for a project thats been in the back of my mind for awile.

Here are some spec ideas:
Shorter stroke(needs to wind up quick)
Needs to be able to fill 2 5-6" stacks(and smoke roll out)
Needs power to roll smoke(tires)
Needs to sound nice
Turbo'd would be nice, but not needed
Mechanical would be nice, but stand-alone component driven would work to

Post up ideas and Price Idea

It will have to be turbo'd for a quick wind up. Obviously a v8 configuration will have a quicker wind up, but are known for reliability issues. The inline configurations can wind quick with heavy fueling and a smaller turbo housing on the turbine. The are rumors of cummins coming out with v6/v8 configurations in the future. The isf 3.9 is a stout little new computer controlled engine that would be a really cool transplant. A duramax or a 7.3 are options. The newer Mercedes and Isuzu diesels in medium duties are wonderful engines but performance parts would be hard to find.

What are you putting this in? That's an 1800 pound engine. What transmission with viable gears could you use? That was made for hauling heavy loads without any concern for speed. There would be a bunch of money thrown at something that would be nauseatingly loud. My 4bt would give me a headache over time. You would be better off staying in something that was made for a one ton truck. IMHO if your going to spend that kind of money you just as we'll have a 500 hp cummins or duramax. What about a 3208 Cat?

3208 cat motors are ******, We have always referred to them as throw away motors. Not worth rebuilding and seriously underpowered!!!!!!

1 word for you CUMMINS

As far as cummins goes.
Can they fill up 2 5" or 6" stacks?
And second off, Can they rap up pretty quick?

Also, where do they top out at as far as rpm?

I have 5 in out the back. You put a phat shaft 12 in turbine with 100 over sticks that ****** will snap your neck.

Boost and fuel = power. You just need to make that turbo spin fast by a small turbine to spin the engine fast. You will have higher egts to go with it.

You will need to beef up your springs. I'm not sure what can be done to your spindles and bearings to handle the extra weight. Maybe pull some from a c20? These engines weigh almost twice a 454.

The real shock comes in the cost of parts. You might wanna start checking into it before you dive in. Those injectors I mentioned are 300 a piece and up. A rebuild kit is about 1200 for a 12 valve. I'm planning on 1700 when it's time for my common rail. I don't even wanna get into the cost of injectors this thing. Then you get into injection pumps and turbo upgrades. It will eat your lunch. I'm saving up now so I can build it the way I want it when it where's out.

I agree that if you want a good desiel for a small truck to go with a cummins or duramax. My dad has a 06 duramax crewcab dually that has upgraded turbos to the point the intake would have to be upgraded to go any bigger and 6in pipes out the back and a boost controller......it beat a brand new camero of a stoplight and has done 50+ foot burn outs.
