Passenger side axle shaft seal sprung a leak today (D60). Looks like I get to spend Saturday tearing my axle apart. Anyone have any good advice to make this easier? Experience do's and dont's?

Thanks in advance.

You talkin about an inner seal? Damn man I think it would have to be leaking pretty bad for me to dig that far to fix it. Keep your carrier bearing shims grouped for the corresponding sides they go in, but I don't think I need to tell ya that. I used a piece of 4' long re-bar with an angle cut on the end to knock the seals out with. When re-installing the axleshafts examine the surfaces the seals rides on and clean them up if they need it, may even need sleeved or built up/turned down if you know someone with a lathe, and good with it.

Didn't you put chromoly axleshafts in recently? I know you did outers but not sure about inners. If you did replace the inners did you mic them against your old ones? Were the seals original, or old-ish/used/abused?

Those are neat, reminds me of the old grease wick outer seals. Basically they were just a cotton rope soaked in grease you would pack in around the outer end of the axle tube. Good for keeping the muck out. Be aware the inner axleshafts have some wobble to them in 4WD so they may not have a long life doing much trail riding/rock crawling. They may help stabilize the wobble though but I'm sure it could result in shorter life.
