I need the retainers or clips that hold the rear edge of the cowl vent cover.

As usual, web searches are being useless. Somehow Google interprets a search for 1981 chevy pickup cowl retainers as 1970 chevy truck grille on eBay!

I've also found many sources for hood to cowl seals, which is completely NOT what I'm looking for.

Perhaps if I knew exactly what GM called those parts, or the GM part number, I could get past Google and Yahoo's stupidity.

I might have some good ones off and ready to go. I'll look into it.

Found on GM Parts Wiki Retainer, cowl to vent grl (outer) 15598770 and 15598769 is the inner.

Two outers and three inners are what it uses.

Edit: Or perhaps not. Earliest year I find for those numbers in 1985, and I see other references to just 81-82. Haven't seen if those numbers supersede the earlier parts.

Nope sorry - I skimmed your question. The ones I referenced above are the front clips that screw the plastic screen into the upper firewall.

I have never seen the plastic piece shown in the image above. All I have seen is the 5 pins (2 outer and 3 inner) on the back of the cowl go directly into the oblong holes in the firewall. I haven't run across any kind of bushing/retainer that would accept the pins. The parts dwgs don't appear to reference any female retainer for the pins either:

The only thing I can think of is that the pins each come with a plastic retainer as an included component. Maybe all the trucks I've seen have lost the plastic parts years ago.

Seems like we cross posted. Nalley's has them, but for big $$.

The two outers are $27.50 and the 3 inners are $25.82 - and that's per piece.

I believe the parts we are discussing are applicable to all 81- 91 model years, but I can't tell you that for sure.

Not only that but, the dwgs don't have enough detail to show whether a female retainer is included with each pin.

Looks like I may have to make something. Parts like these should be a priority for companies making reproduction parts for these trucks.

Somewhere I saw repro cowl grilles, so why not the fasteners to go with them?

Maybe consider using some of these dashboard screw anchors?

If the OD fits into the firewall nice and tight, but the ID won't accept the cowl pins - just drill them out a bit.
