Correct speedometer driven gear tooth count?

My '85 C10 with a Th350C, and 3:08 rear end decided to chew up the driven gear on the tail shaft housing (The one that slips into the "bullet"). What would cause this to happen, and what is the correct tooth count driven gear to replace it with? Thanks.
