I took a 1x4 piece of red oak cut to length to fit between the outer flange, then cut 2 grooves across the face in the locations of the inner webs. In so doing, I held each channel open as well as maintained the overall width.......

Imagine a 1x4 about 18" ling with a groove cut across it 1 1/2" in from each end...........
