DOT regs has a few variations depending on use, but for a regular light duty trailer the spec is alternating white and red reflective surface with a certain spacing, frequency, and locations.

I bought some from a local store and it has adhesive of masking tape. I even cleaned the surface.

Anyone have brands that worked well or any quality choices?

I guess I Just assumed that the stuff at the store was 3m because its backing was 3m.. but thats like 80% of the industry, probably used the incorrect type on their product. but straight from 3m. have you used it for years with success?

I had the red/white on the rear of my travel trailer and white "L" shapes on the slide out. Worked great with no fading or peeling. Granted this was 15 years ago, but my local Napa carried the real 3M items.

The reflective tape is only required for trailers over 10k gvw, if that matters in your application

I have a few trailers that are longer than 30 feet in total, which dont require the tape, but they are quite long and Even when i put the required side lamps on, i would like to have the tape for added safety. on my short trailer, i want to have the tape for purpose of making it obviously a trailer and not the rear of a ghetto pickup. I also am going to have lamps to correspond.

I haven't found any tape that sticks well to any surface that is not perfectly smooth. So if the paint is a little rough, try applying the tape with a lot of pressure and some mild heat.

I believe that is true. It also only has be be 50% coverage along the side, with no specific spacing requirements.

best to be used in equal spacing(not required), should cover half the distance of the trailer(not the tongue), and should be straight as possible.

the only FOR SURE is it has to be specified distance or more from an amber lamp and 3 inches iirc from red lamps.

i think to not confuse drivers of shape or heading in a strange situation
