compounding/polish

DO yall think it would be safe to hit yhte burb with some compound/polish? I don't know much about how the paints/clearcoats ect were back in the early 80s most of the paint on the burb is in decent shape but obviously it has lost its shine. was thinking about using Meguirs ultimate compound. very mile in terms of compounding. want to try and bring back some of the lost luster of the paint. or should I avoid that because of its age?

Unless it is flaking and peeling, no reason not to shine it up. Just try on a non noticeable spot first to make sure not too thin of paint. Or even by hand would work too if finish is too weak.

I used Mcguire compound on mine and it made a big difference. Use a wool pad on a variable speed buffer.

THat is the thing I do have some areas that its to the primer on the left side opf the hood but then on the right side no blemishes at all. kind of like that top portion of your picture 82shortbed the darker brown/blackish colors. been watching so many vidoes on how to do painting yourself with single stage paints and what not. do yall know if OEM our single stage paints are enamel?

Probably no clear on an early 80s model. That compound is amazing. Use it and then a good polish and wax after. The paint will have no protection after the compound and dirt will stick to it like crazy, you will want to get wax on it fast.

Yea, I think I will wind up just maybe painting sections myself 1 at a time. it looks like even with Rattle can if you use a good primer/base coat and use the clear coat spray and do a good job sanding in stages you can basically make the paint look like new. alot of elbow grease but, im assuming as big as these ole girls are. it would not be cheap for a shop to repaint.

First post Newby, but I would really recommend reading this... it talks about single stage paint and how to restore/preserve it in a non-aggressive way. Compounds can be very aggressive if you aren't careful.
