Chop the top? Or don’t, that is the question...

I do not have the skills. Yes I have seen it done. If you keep the slope angles the same, the roof needs to be larger. The spare parts would fill the gaps. If you change the angles to lean in to match the roof size, there are a lot more chances for things not to line up and look right.

Tilt the roof line to the front like a rat rod when you chop it.

If you watch Craigslist for long enough, you'll find one already done. Every month or so, I see a chopped top Squarebody cab or entire truck for sale dirt cheap as they have almost no resale.

In my opinion, I've yet to see a Squarebody that's chopped that looks very good. To make it look good and proportional, you probably would need to section the entire body an inch or two as well.

Tilt front end, dump bed, suicide doors. Just needs 20 or so chrome shocks and it would be straight out of 1988.

Was it hard to sell or did they take a huge hit when they sold it?

So your dad gave you this truck, is there any sentimental attachment to the truck being it was your dads? If there is, maybe keep her slammed and do it up how he had it. Then find another one & go to town on it!

Have you asked him about this idea, what are his reactions? If there is nothing sentimental about it I would go for it. I ask this because I have my dads 51 Ford Truck, and I would never heavily modify it like that. Another 51 though that wasn't his, I would cut the hell out of it.

I personally think a chopped top dually would look cool. Obviously will take another donor like someone mentioned. The roof of your truck would probably have to be cut into 4 equal pieces and fill in the gaps. I personally thought a late 70's Suburban chopped a few inches would look awesome.

I've seen 2 chopped C10's.
The proportions were off with the roof cut to body. I guess they chopped a lot off to justify the amount of work involved.
If you do it, you might as well put a cage in it as you will have the roof off.
You'll run into a lot of different opinions on it. There really isn't a right answer. Just do what you feel.
Be sure it's safe.

Just looking into the idea of it and why there is any opposition to it.

Dad is 10years in the ground, I’m coming up on 40, he didn’t have the skills to do some of these things himself, others he ran out of money for, he would of loved to see the suspension configuration, the chop I have no idea... I plan still to modify the width of the box to be a fleet side smaller in width and a fuel tank that is molded into the bed. Lots to do, have been posting on here since I started it.

I have my dads 89 he bought fairly new, but chopping the top or lowering it was never on the agenda.
3/4 ton conversion and cab lights were what we wanted to do.

Mainly on my end it's just an appearance thing, but that's what's cool. You can do anything you want.
Plenty of people disagree with what I did with my truck and I'm fine with that.
Just as long as it makes you happy.
It's also a good learning experience. Don't worry so much what we think.
We will call you out if it's unsafe though.
