choke light issue

hello out there. new to site have not seen anything on a choke light issue.
I have a 82 chevy k10 with a 350. I have recently replaced manifolds to headers and dual exhaust. I also replaced quadrajet automatic choke with an edelbrock 600cfm peformance carb. once i replaced manifolds to headers choke light came on. and stayed on. even after adding new carb choke light stays on. there was a vacuum line going into a plunger behind automatic choke on quadrajet. the new carb does not have this. how to fix?

What did you do with the wire that was connected to the choke heater on the Q-jet?

That wire needs to be connected to ground.

Power for the choke heater goes through the engine oil pressure switch. When oil pressure hits 10 psi at start up, the contacts close and shunts power from the choke light on the dash over to the heating coil in the choke pull.

When you ground that choke heater wire (with the engine is running and oil pressure established), the CHOKE light should go out.

You can see that the CHOKE light also functions as a low oil pressure indicator. So be aware that if it lights up with the engine running ... shut down quick. You may have lost oil pressure (below 10 psi).

wire for choke heater

there was a one wire connection originally. new carb there are two. the "hot wire" or original wire went to positive connection on carb.the ground that came with the new carb is grounded to carb as instructed from directions when hooking it up. oil pressure gauge in truck, and pressure is fine in that aspect, so i have eliminated that as being the issue. and also if misinformed. the light came on after i removed exhaust manifolds and put headers on truck. so the light has been on since. new carb was bought week later and after installing light has not gone off.

Sounds like that ground wire isn't making it to ground. Try grounding it to the engine to see if the light goes out, if so then the ground may need to go there instead of the carb.

So the choke light was on before the carb was even installed - right?

Sounds like the new E-brock carb has nothing to do with the situation. That extra ground wire is good in my opinion. The q-jet heater coil grounds through the choke pull housing, then the carb body and then to the intake manifold. I would eliminate the carb as the issue.

You have normal oil pressure as indicated on the dash gauge, so eliminate low oil pressure.

That leaves the oil pressure switch and the wiring that connects the switch to the choke heater.

Might as well work backwards:

With the engine running and oil pressure established, remove the hot wire to the choke heater and observe voltage there.

There will most likely not be any voltage. If there is then the problem is related to the new carburetor.

Assuming no voltage. Check for a faulty switch. Pull the terminal connector off the oil pressure switch - it's the one on the drivers side. It as a snap on cover that must be popped off with a screwdriver.

Start the engine and check the dash. If the light is out, the problem is the switch.

If the light is still on, you will need to start looking for a broken wire. If that is the case come back here and we'll work it out.
