I have a radio in my attic that came out of an 84 gmc. Am/fm tape deck but I’m not sure the tape player is functional. I’ll see if I can dig it out of your interested.

Got a GM AM/FM supposedly 78 Caprice. States on the top, stamped into the steel cover "DO NOT OPERATE WITHOUT 8 to 10 OHM SPEAKERS" Also GM part # 16001650. So if you are looking for speakers you better be sure to get what matches your unit.

I pulled my original gm stereo and replaced it with a JVC tape deck unit in my 75 c20 in 1987. I never bothered to look at it to see what it called for. Every system I ever put in my vehicles since then have all been 4 ohm speakers. But if Idaho read that on the unit then I would check to make sure you don't mess up the unit.

Now I've always installed aftermarket systems in a ton of vehicles. So I can't speak on old OEM stereos. I don' know when they went to 4 ohm speakers but I'm 99% sure they are 4 ohm systems now. So like Idaho stated better check just to make sure. I'd hate to tell you to use 4 ohm speakers and have it fry your radio.

I'm guessing a 16 gauge but I ran 14 gauge on mine.

For a stock radio with 8-10 ohm speakers, even 20 gauge will work fine for short cable runs. I'd be concerned about 4 ohm speakers on a stock radio that was designed for 8-10 ohms. It would be at lest twice the current draw on the amplifier section, which could potentially cause a failure.

It's more money, but there are amplifiers available that take the speaker outputs from a stock radio and convert to amplified 4 ohm outputs. Also, if the radio is mono, not stereo, you can connect two 4 ohm speakers in series.
