Anyone here running one (or two)? Had a good friend of mine pass away a couple years back - was HUGE on these things. We used them especially on boosted turbo motors. I made 3 out of stainless (quart +) and used 1....was thinking of using it on my new motor.

Could swear I saw someone mention one once but cant find it now.

They are really only used on diesels that have a ton of blow by.

There was an article a few years ago about Maserati's - they had factory add on kits for them. Said that it pulled the water / condensation out of the oil (crud that was usually re-burned) and that after 20-30k miles, inside of the motors were super clean.

I made one for a 4cyl NA car - about every other oil change, you'd drain the can and it'd look like egg nog....milky water-oil sludge. (the red decal was one I made up - in Swedish and English to look like an authentic add-on).

They are big in the LS crowd due to the PCV system and running oily air into the throttle body and intake. Some motors consume more than others and it becomes another item to check/maintain as they get full but if the situation warrants, or you want a clean intake then run it. Havent heard much of it either way for SBC's.

The ones I have around have a (IIRC) 2 qt capacity - chicom junk on feebay is about 20 oz if you're lucky. Fits in the same bracket the charcoal canister sits in. Has a petcock and tube on the bottom - drains real quick and easy at oil change time. Just trying to figure how I'd plumb it in a SBC. I know someone has used these in one.

@fmxr47 made me realize that filter housings for spray equipment make great oil catch cans. They don't cost much at all.

They’re almost a must for gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. With the injector in the cylinder rather than upstream of the intake valve, oil vapor cakes on the valve and makes them seat and flow poorly much sooner than you’d expect.

Also, of some interest for anyone with a GDI engine, is the NOACK oil volatility chart. It ranks oils for their propensity to vaporize in the crankcase, only to be circulated back into the intake.

The top ones are $15/quart ester based synthetics like redline or amsoil; but Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is right up there at 3rd or fourth. Unfortunately, it’s not DexOS certified. So I run the Ultra Platinum in my wife’s Honda and it’s slightly lesser, albeit actually DexOS certified Platinum in the new chebby.

I have one on mine mounted on the firewall to capture the oily mist so it doesn’t contaminate my fuel charge. Nothing fancy. Maybe $30 in it. Harbor Freight water separator with most of the guts removed and the drain nipple epoxied shut. I just keep an eye on the sight glass and empty when needed. Last time I had the carbs off, the blower case was nice and clean on the inside with no oily residue. Serves my purpose

I had one for a while on another car, it didn't catch much oil. Ended up taking it off. I used Amsoil though.

catch cans do wonders, if properly installed. The problem is a lot of people either put them on wrong, or they aren't air tight, or they screw up some other part of the system. Looking at the inside of this L29 intake... I'm definitely going to run one, maybe two of them on my engine swap. It is super gross and completely caked in oil inside there.

We had them mostly on turbos - without one the intercooler pipes would be puddled with oil at every oil change. All the ones I ever used were on 4cyl - was just wondering how to plumb it on a V8. Just venting it off one valve cover enough - or do a Y to one can or run 2 cans?

I have the cap with the valve in it plumbed to the catcher and then under the base of the back carb. Works for me.
