Catalytic converters: does your square have them?

Does your square have a catalytic converter?

  • yes

  • no

  • yes, but only because I couldn't get a sticker/plate without them.

  • no, but only because I'm too lazy/cheap to change what the previous owner did.

  • no, because my truck didn't come with them.

So it was brought to my attention that apparently I'm the odd man out because I have a catalytic converter (2 actually) on my truck.
Just looking to see what's out there on squares.

No. I don’t hate them or anything, but sooner or later they start to come apart and rattle, and there are enough things to rattle as it is. My little car has been rattling, but in that case I’ll probably try to gut the cat so it still looks right if I ever drive it to a place like the Banana Republic of Commiefornia where CHP might lay on the ground to look at that stuff. I know, I know, who would ever go there anyway.

Bottom line, if they’re behaving, I wouldn’t worry about them; fry the bigger fishes, but when they start to make noise, I say take off and stay off.

When i was looking for a c10 one of the must haves was a non cat truck. The heavy 10's from 75-78 and non kalifornia 79's didn't have cats.

I'll be the first to show up with cats. Actually just one. I live out in the country where there is no emissions check, but I like them because there is less smell and less damaging stuff in the exhaust. If you have seen my other cat posts, I like them because of a little thing called NOx which is in exhaust and is really good at destroying lung tissue. a properly functioning cat cuts down on NOx emissions quite a bit.

49 state 79's Big Tens have a cat, they raised the GVWR exemption from 6000 to 8600.
My 79 is a Saint Louis built federal emissions, 6200 GVWR, 350 4bbl, only had a cat, EGR, EFE, and charcoal canister. No A.I.R/smog pump.

With that said both my 76 and 79 were factory equipped with large pellet type cats, but I deleted them as Missouri doesn't do emissions on stuff 1996 and older.

I thought that happened in the mid-70's. I remember someone in 78 buying a K20 not because he needed a 3/4 ton, but because it came without a cat or air pump.

1975 cats became standard on cars and trucks under 6000 GVWR, Then for the 1979 model year it was upped to 8500, which defeated the F/44 chassis designations usage of the higher GVWR to be able to not require cats. looks like California had already raised it to 8500 in 78
