I picked up a 99 vortec 350 and I am thinking about putting it in a 85 1 ton wrecker

I found a 4 barrel intake for the vortec heads on ebay for a little over a 100 bucks

I need to swap the timing chain cover so I have a timing tab get the carb intake and run a electric pump

the truck already has a one piece rear main engine so the flywheel will swap right over

is there anything I am forgetting

the intake showed up today it is a procomp

its basically a performer copy

its generic but it will work just fine for a wrecker motor

I have new gaskets and rod and main bearings on the way

the bearings are not to bad but the have some wear so while I am there its a good idea to change them out

need to check timing chain and oil pump as well

Get a regular timing chain cover for a newer TBI truck, as well as a timing set from a TPI Camaro or Corvette. Add a timing tab, and call it a day.

You might want to ck that before you go out and buy a cover.

the sheet metal issue on the timing cover is 1996 on up will not interchange with 1995 on down. The gasket rail/wall whatever you want to call it carves a slightly different path on the 1996+ due to the crank trigger wheel that has to be housed in that area. 1996+ motors had plastic timing covers with integral silicone bead gasket

it has a sheet metal cover on it now

I dug threw my storage and found one I had

it bolted right up only difference I could see was the block does not have 2 of the holes one on each side by the water pump mounts

the gasket matched up perfect

I pulled the crank trigger ring off

I picked up a '99 Vortec 350 for my stepside, it's plastic cover has a timing pointer. I was just going to buy a new cover (they probably seal better than a stamped cover missing two bolts) and put timing tape on the balancer so I can set timing.

my balancer had the line on it for timing

I really don't think the missing bolts will cause a leak on all the engine I have had I can't remember ever having a leak from the timing cover other than the seal for the balancer or oil pan

My new 906 vortecs have a hole on the exhaust port side between cylinder 1 and 3 that I dont know what to put in. The other head has the whole but that one on the old heads was just plugged.

For the coolant temp gauge sensor. Take the plug out of the other head and put it in the new head.
