Out of all my engines, this has never happened to me before. Closest thing was a stud that pulled out on my old K5, and a Comp Cams roller tip rocker that got some wear in it and caused some ticking.

That's the first I ever seen of that happen. Now I've seen similar from running to big a cam, and the rocker studs were grooved too from not running the long slots. So that's the first for me. And I know of a few rocker studs getting pulled, again, to big of a cam and should have been running screw in studs anyway. Builder error on all accounts IMO.

I think the stud that pulled out on my K5 was just due to age. It could have been avoided if the machine shop had paid more attention. It was a stock '75 400 shortblock, cam and all. I had a set of '71 LT1 heads redone for it and when I was installing them, I noticed a few studs were starting to pull out. At that point I just said fock it and knocked them back in. After a while another pulled out some and I just knocked it back in too. It was fine after that.

So what about Retro's impaled rockers? What causes that?

So then maybe just bad rockers like you suggested. What else is there?

I know that SBC uses 3 different kind of rockers,, the standard set that uses tube type push rods..

the second type use ball end tip type push rods..

and the third are the new self aligning ones......

with the second type of rocker that use the ball end pushrod,, you can NOT use the tube type pushrods,, they go to far into the rocker push rod pocket and will bind and cause alot of problems and also wont oil the rocker ball as it should......

but ball end push rods can be used on any type of sbc rockers.......

smooth balls for the rockers are way better than groved,, yea it was a good idea @ the time,, but the groves allow the oil to run out of the rocker ball pocket faster.......

this is a law for sbc,, if you run long slot rockers,,USE ball tiped push rods and non groved balls........

for roller rockers use i use chrome molley tub type push rods with hardened tips,, the insert on a roller rocker is also hardened..so as not to eat up the soft tip of a stock push rod......

To stiff of a valve spring will cause Punch through also,, and the obvious coil bind.....

I never knew there were different rockers depending on pushrod style. That could be the issue then because the car has the tube type pushrods. I do not know if they are original or if the PO installed them. It also has the grooved balls.

One other thing came to mind while i was out digging through my junk.

Once rocker balls and rockers are run for a while,, there are MARRIED for life..

that means they have been working together long enough to get used to each other,, best metaphor i could come up with.....

now ive seen guys rip um off the head and put um all in the parts basket to give um a good cleaning,,,wrong....

it is imposable to mate um up again and sometimes? if your running a stock factory low lift grocery getter,, you can get away with it....

But the best way to use used rocker and balls,, if ya dont have the funds for new, and the OLD ones are 100 times better, is to pull um off the head 1 at a time and string them on a wire as they come off,, that way they stay together when ya put um back on....

and it really dont matter what stud or valve ya put um on ether,, as long as the rocker and ball that are mated stay together....

Also? most of the New rockers ya get at your local parts house are from CHINA,, mexico has better parts......

but any and all rockers i get were from GM,, but they only make the self alining ones,,, all the old style have been discontinued and you will have to drill out the push rod passage in the head or they will bind on the older type of iron heads....

the new aluminum heads already have the holes bored out for the new type of rockers and with the new rockers? also,, you cant run push rod guide plates on the heads,, it will cut the push rod in 2.......

Hope this helps........

I have never bothered keeping the balls with the matching rockers and I've never had any issues with it before. Now, usually they get tossed in a box and the balls usually stay with the corresponding rocker on accident. But I'm sure I've mixed up a ton of them.

I didn't plan to buy any parts store cheapies, I'm on the lookout for a good deal on roller rockers.
