Brake lights always on

Finished installing the professionally rebuilt 3-on-the-tree steering column in my bone stock 250 ci 1984 C10. Everything works well EXCEPT the brake lights stay on even with ignition switch off. All other lights work fine. Did I bump it and break something (pun intended).

Brake lights have constant power, so key on or off doesn't matter .

Probably the brake lights switch got knocked out of adjustment- it just had little plastic ridges on it where it goes into the bracket.

That is exactly what happened. When I released the wire connector and pulled it apart
I unknowingly pulled the switch in the direction of the seat. This moved the switch away from the brake pedal arm so switch could not contact the arm and turn off the switch.

I pushed it back and now works like a charm.

Hey Shorty81,

I love my 3 on-the-tree. Having the column rebuilt by Steering Columns Galore was expensive, but well worth it. I plan to keep the 250 as well. The speedo quit after 200K. I have taken good care of the engine even when the truck has sat for months. I keep the battery on a trickle charger and keep it lubed with full syn. I squirt Marvel Mystery oil in cylinders before cranking and Stabil in the tank. It sat almost a year due to the column issues, but fired right up once my column was in with the new ignition switch and lock cylinder. No smoke and plugs are clean.

My next project is to figure out the serious stumble upon acceleration. Doesn't matter if it is from a stop or while at speed. I bet I need a carb rebuild and to replace some vacuum lines. Any ideas of where to start?

sounds like a good starting point. Check fuel filter also.

Well now you know where switch is and how it works, you also know where to splice in a brake light defeat switch.

Dang! fuel filter is exactly where I should start. I bet Mr. Maintenance has never changed it cause he never thought of it! Thanks Shorty.

i would start with the accelerator pump in the carb.

Haha. When we first got our licenses. My buddy had a cop turn around at night to pull him over. He hauled ass and turned into a field and turned off his lights and engine. The cop pulled into the field and gave him a ticket. Right before he walked back to the squad car. He said " next time you're trying to hide from the cops. Take your foot off the break". He could of used that switch that night. Lol
