Decided to do some preventative mx on my truck today and change fluids out. Dropped the transmission pan to replace filter and gasket. Noticed all this gunk at the bottom.

Yummy clutch soup.
yep, that's all clutch material. That's a pretty impressive buildup too. We rarely see that much from the development units they abuse on the dynos. I predict a rebuild in your near future.

Awesome...if I was to start looking for a 700r4 what should I be looking for? Are there certain years better than others? I know a K stamped case is important but what else?

That beats anything I've ever seen. Ugly....

I was always under the impression that the "K" case was a 4x4 unit, I could be wrong however. Iirc anything after '87 or '88 should be good.

Yep, 87 and newer.. Easy identification just look for the rainbow casting line on the right side of the case..

If all that black sludge is clutch material my truck shouldn’t even be able to move. I drove it just the other day and shifted fine.

Lol, how's it doing now that it has new fluid, and anything resembling friction material is no longer suspended in it?

I have to go get more transmission fluid, so I haven’t drove it around yet.

I have to go get more transmission fluid, so I haven’t drove it around yet. It took every bit of 4 qrts, and it’s barely showing on the dipstick. To be honest I’m not sure how long is was drove around low on fluid.

I want to say that the last fluid/filter change I did on the 700r4 in my '88 took 5 quarts.

Well folks, I reckon I’m going to have my th350 rebuilt. I’ve been juggling around the idea of going with a 700r4 for OD and lower rpms on the highway. But I think I’m just going to change out my gears which will help a lot. I currently have 4.10 gears, do you see a problem stepping down to 3.08s? I don’t haul or really tow anything. Here’s the comparison chart between gears, 1K difference in rpms:
