Does anyone here have any knowledge about these old Johnson motors? Like what’s missing from the protrusion in the last picture? Any idea where to find parts?

Wow, this has been a Dumpster Fire of a thread!

That old V-6 Evinrude was solid...in its day. I can still remember the ads for those OMCs. They were Loop Charged which was the OMC jargon for how the intake and exhaust gases circulated. They were gas hogs, their fuel consumption rates were bad even for that era. I cannot imagine anyone today wanting one of those old Evinrudes with all of the advancements in outboard technology. They were also pretty heavy. That fish and ski should be written off.

I am thinking that the "protrusion" on your 10HP Johnson is for a choke knob.

I am sure you are tired of all the Boat Jokes by now but since I just started reading I will let you have a couple more anyway.

1. A boat is a hole in the water surrounded by fiberglass into which you dump your money.

2. You made a mistake getting that 10 HP Johnson. While those were decent motors, if one were to run anything less than a 150HP it was best to get the Evinrude instead. You buy the Johnson outboard from 150HP and up, the 275HP and 300HP V-8 versions in the mid '80s are especially desirable.

You don't want everyone to know you have a little Johnson!

Lol well, that’s why I got rid of the fiberglass one and got me an aluminum John boat. Anyway the motor was free, just trying to work with what I have. That’s good information on the evinrude, I don’t know a thing about them lol.

Ok, I’ve even working on the trailer some this week. Got new lights and wiring run, new bunk boards, new winch, and adjusted everything to fit the boat. Started on the hubs today to do new bearings and ran into this. The cotter pin doesn’t have enough room to come out. The nut is recessed into the chrome collar. Do I need to cut the pin out?

Use some Common Sense here. How do you think they got the pin INTO the nut? That entire "chrome collar" comes off. The end you took off should have been left in place. That entire thing is called a Bearing Buddy. The chrome piece goes on in place of the regular cap but has a grease zert in the end to allow you to add grease more easily.

Take the chrome piece off entirely just as you would any other bearing cap.

Ok that makes sense. Been out in the heat too long today I guess. This is the first trailer I’ve had with bearing buddies.

I think its going to be a lot cheaper and easier than the last project. As long as it doesn't have corrosion issues.

I’m going to get my dad to send some, it’s his pastor that is selling it and they’re two hours away. It’s a 15 hp for sure, evinrude i think.

First of all, take your time. No rush.
Second, with a white lower unit and mid-section I am thinking Johnson. So yes. You probably have a small Johnson.
