That's when you should be in the power circuit, when you have low vacuum. The step-up pistons are supposed to spring up inside the carb and richen the mixture, or you will go lean and the fire will go out. If you go easy on it accelerating, it will stay in the cruise circuit and be fine. Stuck step-up pistons will definitely cause something like what you are describing. To fix them, you just need to wipe them off and wash the bores with WD-40, and then put them back. Takes five minutes.
That still may not be it, but it's easy to fix. I clean mine twice a year cause they get gummed up.
