Back to owning a square body!

I am a long time enthusiast from south Texas of square body trucks I recently bought my 3rd square body and it’s a 2wd 1987 c30 dually roller got it from a co worker that pulled the engine and trans for his blazer so at least it went into another square. I had previously owned 2 shortbeds prior, with the dually now I’m trying to figure out what engine to put in it to get it back on the road and somewhat reliable for a good 30-50 mile range for now. I’d like to do a diesel conversion down the road of course and a nice air suspension but for now I need to prove to my wife that it can be more than a yard ornament lol. Just curious on any engine and trans combination you guys or gals are running. I know the common is bbc 454 in these trucks but is anybody running a sbc or ls combos and is their any struggles pulling utility/car trailers? Thanks in advance.

I dont think id sbc that unless its got good horses lol thats a big ride to have a sbc tuggin all the time. Nice truck tho

Welcome! People love the LS setups. With something being setup for towing with your crew cab a 8.1l and a NV4500 would be a sweet setup. But you can never go wrong with a 454 or other BBC.

I’d do a 454 if it were me. It might be easier and cheaper to get a low mileage TBI setup out of an old motorhome to match your wiring harness, but some people would disagree and say carb all the way, which is perfectly fine.

And if your 454 needs a rebuild.... stroker! A few extra cubes won't hurt.

As far as a sbc... well, maybe a 383 and lower gear ratios.(Your camper Special already has low gears). But I wouldn't consider towing anything more
than a lawn mower with a sb.
You will love how this truck handles the highway, btw.

Ive never been more ashamed, a lawnmower has a healthier small block than my c10, I need a 454 now.. Small blocks are ruined..
