Any Tricks for stuck oil filter ?

About 20 years ago I had to try the screwdriver trick. I ended up with half a filter still stuck to the block. I can only assume I forgot to oil the gasket, man was that thing stuck. I ended up getting one of these.

I've had them be stuck on really good, because I didn't leave a film of the used oil on the filter mount. I do that, and put fresh oil on the gasket and the threads, and they always come off with my AC cup wrench and the 1/2 drive ratchet. I do have a Lisle band wrench, and another one that's a loop of timing chain and a 1/2" ID square tube. Had to use that one, years ago, on a company minivan (Phord Windstar,V6 with no room and the filter was seriously stuck). That did the trick, with ratchet and cheater pipe.

These work extremely well and fit in many confined spaces too.

I see you got it to come off the engine. I use a pipe wrench when the filters won't come off

I've actually ripped a couple of these up on filters before. There not as good as I hoped.

My donor engine had one MF stuck filter when I got it. I tried everything mentioned here and still no go. Old mechanic buddy gave me his snap on version of this to try. It came off like butter. WTF? I consoled my ego by convincing myself that all my previous efforts had loosened it, lol

I've always heard people say the screwdriver thing, but I always figured if it was tight enough a wrench wouldn't get it off, the screw driver would just cut through the metal. I'm surprised they are tough enough to handle that....

Yup that’s luck of the draw. If it’s a fram filter light a match and call the ins company. Those things rip like old wall paper

After you stick your screwdriver through it and rip the hole outer casing off the oil filter. I made this out of a 1 1/4 socket. What a night mare.

Oh man, I’m sorry I didn’t see this conversation earlier. I once had an oil filter that would not come off with any tool that I had, to use on my ‘68 Olds Cutlass/Olds 350 and there wasn’t enough clearance to use a screwdriver long enough to get enough leverage on. I found this tool and it is absolutely the best. It got the filter off even after I mangled it using the other methods. This set comes in two different sizes (MX2330, MX2331). The harder you twist it, the teeth dig deeper and deeper. I know, it’s not very often you run across a tight fitting filter but you should have this in your arsenal for just those occasions, and it’s made in America. www.motivxtools.com
