So, looks like my 700r4 is on the way out. Slipping like crazy in 3 and overdrive. Had to limp it home in 2nd gear. Fluid smells not good, but not low.

I was thinking time to go manual, but looks too involved. Not sure just yet.

Anyhow just found a local guy selling a 700r4 that he had for a project that fell thru. From a mid 80’s S10. Looks like a tail shaft from a 2wd rig. Mine is 4x4. Waiting for him to call me back.

Will a 700r4 from a 2wd truck work in a 4x4? Just a matter of removing tail shaft housing??

Thanks

The 2wd has a significantly longer output shaft. I tried finding a diagram comparing them, but came up empty handed.

Ok thanks, I believe ya. Too good of a deal for me. $50. He just wants it out of his way.

Time to research and see if there’s a 5 speed manual conversion that will work with little to no headaches. If there is such a thing.

The 4x4 case is different, it has provisions for the cast aluminum torque converter inspection cover. The 2wd output shaft is longer.

Yes, output shafts can be swapped out. Or if you are patient, have basic tools you can rebuild one yourself. Or have it rebuilt. I would still be on the lookout anyway for a spare transmission even after you get yours on the road.

If you look up drive shell replacement on a 4L60, that’s basically the procedure to swap output shafts. There are lots of videos on you tube.

Remove the servo from the side of the case. Remove the governor. Remove the pump, carefully lift the input housing and reverse input drum out of the case. Remove the band. Remove the sun gear. Remove the snap ring from the output shaft, most likely the output shaft will fall out of the case. Reverse the disassembly.

I have replaced drive shells without valve body removal. The pumps on 700/4L60 transmissions are aluminum, they aren’t threaded for a slide hammer to remove them like the old school transmissions. They take a special puller, or if you are very careful you can pry them out from inside the pan area.

Thanks for the info guys.

Looks like I’m on the hunt for someone to rebuild my trans. And to look up any recommended upgrades.
