Any AC gurus?

If one pieced together an AC system how would they determine how much refrigerant to use for maximum cooling efficiency? I assume the pressures on the high side versus low side play into the equation but how do you know when enough is enough? Asking for a friend..;)

I D/L'd this video awhile back for just such an emergency. Cars I retrofitted used a Sanden vs a York (driers were far different too).....used stuff like this to figure the new amount.

I just fill it slowly on the low pressure side using a gauge set I have until the high side pressure stabilizes at the right pressure for the ambient temperature. Then I check the vent temps to make sure it is hitting the right values and send it. I fill the individual components with PAG while assembling and just fill with dry R134
