That looks like the opening for the dipstick tube. Being a replacement engine, they have two spots for the dipstick, one on each side. Typically there is a solid plug in that hole, not a bolt.

Some vehicles have it back there on the driver's side. This engine in Crusty Biscuit is from a different vehicle, I believe it's from a Camaro or the like, but the dipstick would be better suited on the passenger side, however, I don't think this block has that provision.

This is the factory engine from my '81 C20, you can see the boss is there, but it has not been machined for the dipstick tube...

On the passenger side, the dipstick tube on this same engine is much lower, but I do know on crate engines it is higher up...

Wow! Look at those AIR lines!!
Last time I saw them things was when I was removing and disposing of them on my dads 85 Chevy in 1992!
