Picked up this beater truck today. Does not run(loud racket when trying to), 4x4, 5 speed, tpi set up. Block supposed to be stroked to a 383. Retro picked up the tpi from the bird before i had a chance to swap intake runners. Need intake runners from it, then maybe figure out why it does not run.

tpi no more. Put old iron gm intake on and factory tbi distributor. Still do not know why it will not rotate more than 20 degrees. Rods look ok, pistons intact, all valve stems in place. Clutch engages and disengages. Maybe timing chain broke?
411 heads, roller tip rockers, 4 bolt block.

It's definitely been gone through with the numbers on the rods. Are you trying to turn it over with the starter or breaker bar?

I am using a big ratchet to turn. It turns about 15-20* before stopping in both direction. First i thought clutch, but it appears to work, then checked for dropped valves, followed by checking the block. Have not found an issue yet.
As it sits now

looks like initially I overlooked cylinder #8 on inspection under the valve cover. Took a second look and found a dropped valve. Rod appears to be bent a bit as well, as the motor still will not do a complete rotation.

New rod, piston, valve and try to run it?

If no damage to the cylinder I'd say just fix the piston and rod. But I wonder though, if the cam lobe took any abuse when the push rod bent?

Turns out i keep missing things working at midnight. Block is fine, connecting rods are fine too. It was in gear making it hard to spin. Cylinder wall is not scored, cross hatch still visible. Going to throw it together with a new valve/spring and get it driving again.

well, looking at the head in day light realized that the valve guide is shot. Also this block using non standard head gasket. It is missing a coolant passage hole between center two cylinders on one side.

I think I recognize this truck from another forum. If you have some time do some searching on GM truck central. Theres a guy on there that has done several vortec era trucks with a TPI. I was going to get him to mod my harness for me but I just haven't had the extra cash to have it done. If I get a chance I look an see if I can the thread. If it isn't on that forum its on gmt400 but he is more active on gm truck central

I'm 90% positive he did the tpi on this one because I remember reading it and paying closer attention sicne this truck was a 5 spd.

This was a hack swap, very unlikely to be the one you are talking about.
might be buying the following:

so far better than expected. Trying to replace the valve guide.

that punch in following picture was not used in getting the guide out. I used a slightly undersized .490 straight punch. Just a picture of the guide out.
