Well its not the Evil Crew Cab I was going to purchase, the GOV shutdown at the time made me re-evaluate the necessity of that beautifull monster. I ended up with a much smaller and in all honesty, practical vehicle....a 76' CJ-7.

Basic stats on the CJ are as follows…. first year CJ7, just over 90K orig mi – AMC 401 – TH400 – Quadra Trac (w/PT conversion) – PS/PB - D30/AMC 20 (1 piece) both with Aussie lockers and 4.56’s – 4” CJ springs – 33 MT Baja Claws on 15X8 Eagles….. original Levi’s low backs in great condition. Body is uncut, straight and clean.

Its mechanically solid and just needs some freshening up.....

Po definitely used it, but also took good care of it:

Since bringing home on 10/26 Ive pulled the top and re-painted it black. Its sitting in the garage now awaiting tint before I reinstall it.

PO put diamond plate on the rear corners to fix a problem from his PO. Apparently that guy fabbed up a homemade tire carrier and re-located the fuel filler to the pass side. My PO put it back to stock and the diamond plate was just an easy fix to cover all the holes. As provided in the pics, there’s no rust underneath. I pulled those and did them with bedliner and installed a set of rear marker lights which were NIB given to me with the purchase…as were several other goodies…

I noticed the TH400 kickdown switch was not in position to work correctly……a couple new holes to move it closer and bam:

PO also had a hood ornament he was attached to, so I told him he could keep it….which left me with a small hole in the hood. I cleaned that up, filled it and smoothed it out. Rather than re-painting, I decided to go with a repro graphic kit a’la 72-73’ Renegade…..I didn’t care for the 76’ kit.

It gets a little squirrely at freeway speeds so I sourced a front sway bar and will use 4” disconnect links as well. Ill be picking that up this weekend and ordering some 4" disconnects. It was lifted with 4” ProComp springs - shocks and greasable shackles…. someday I do plan on swapping to BDS YJ springs. The shocks will probably get replaced before that, when I do Ill probably go with Bilstein 5100’s. Po had the rear pinion shimmed and installed a Tom Woods double cardan driveshaft....

Definitely needs an alignment, just need the time to get it in to the shop.

76’ came with drum brakes X4. My PO sourced a set of 78’ axles and swapped to front discs’. He gave me the 78’ rear AMC 20 with the center diff in case I ever decide to swap the QT to a D300 t-case. For those who don’t know the QT t-case uses a passenger side rear diff.

I was told the motor was from an 80’s Wagoneer and had about 20K mi on it when my PO did the swap. Judging from the cleanliness of it I’d say that’s pretty accurate. Fluids were changed upon bringing it home.

From the PO:

…motor is stock and 100% factory clean. It has a newer 4 core rad and a 3” exhaust with a cat and Flowmaster, single exit behind driver’s rear tire….sounds good too. It may or may not pass AZ emissions, but I tagged it with Collectors insurance in order to avoid the hassle.

All gauges – lights – controls and heater work perfectly….even the factory AM radio. I may at some point install a Tuffy center console and newer head unit, but until then I consider the AM radio and theft deterrent. My theory is that a potential thief turd will look inside, laugh and move on to a more profitable victim.

Things Im on the hunt for now are:

YJ half doors and mirrors….

Padding for the roll bar….

Id love to install a factory tach and clock…..

Black seat covers…..

That’s pretty much where Im at right now. I haven’t decided exactly where I want to go with it. It will primarily be a weekend cruiser-wheeler and maybe taken to work 1-2X a week.

The biggest dilema I have now is deciding which to drive-ride:
