I’m inheriting my Father’s 83 2wd stepside. My uncle bought it new in 83. It’s a factory truck 4 speed manual. My Father just replaced the bed, fenders and doors. Along with a new paint job. I’m going to get it on Sunday. I hope I don’t jinx myself by posting this before I have it.
I’ve owened a 72 stepside, 81 short bed, and a lowered red 85 stepside.

Which 4 speed does it have? The SM465 or the NP833 overdrive?

It has the granny gear one, so I guess the 465.
I was thinking about a T5 from a S10. The original trans works, just not a gear bang’n trans.

T5 or a Getrag out of a 90s 1/2 ton would be a great upgrade.

Howdy from Ohio!

The T5 trans is a very light duty unit and probably won't hold up to much gear bangin' in a full size truck. The rare A833 overdrive trans would be a good choice, and so would a later NV3500.
