My neighbor has a 77 Eldorado with the 425 in it. It is not getting fuel.im sure there are some other minor issues but for the sake of this post everything else functions as it should. I ordered a new fuel pump last week after disconnecting the fuel line to the carb and observing no fuel being pumped out when cranked. Today got the filter and pump swapped out today. Now i can see the jets are clogged on the carb. Its a Rochester. Whats the least invasive/expensive way to get the jets open again. I have 0 experience with carbs. Not looking to have to have him throw alot of money at it.or me a bunch of time. Im just helping him out with his summer backroads booze cruizer.

Honestly, if it’s just a run of the mill divorced or electric choke (M4MC/E) carb, I’d go through and rebuild it because of age and ethanol. Raunchy, old carbs can incur several problems like leaky well plugs, vacuum leak at the primary shaft, shredded acc. pump diaphragm, and just the general gumming up from sitting. The bushing is pretty much out of the question if you don’t have the press to do it, but the other stuff can be found in online, picture heavy tutorials or the Cliff Ruggles Quadrajet book if you want to be fancy. Otherwise, you’re looking at about $200 to send it out and get it rebuilt and bushed correctly, which is what I would do if I were in that boat. All that a home brew rebuild is gonna cost you is the kit and the time.

If little tiny parts bother you, like they do me, I’d be apprehensive to do it. If you’re okay with keeping up with that stuff and keeping it in order, that’s the hardest part to me. I’d search Google and YouTube for videos and tutorials to see what you think. There’s so much Quadrajet literature and multimedia out there, that virtually any question you’d come up with should be covered.

The first time I rebuilt a quadrajet I video taped myself taking it apart and was glad I did.

X2
on tiny parts
X2 on "leaky well plugs" Google THAT.

That's not hard to fix, but don't "rebuild" it without fixing that.

I'm serious.

You can do it in your garage for $40 I bet. It's easier than you think.

You'll have to buy a rebuild kit to get an "air horn" gasket which MAY BE all you REALLY need to "fix" it but you really might as well "rebuild" it.

I never had occasion to mess with the shaft in question so can't speak of it. - make of that what you will.

Good luck! '87 won't steer ya wrong.
