Interesting...The case itself is a 1991 model year case, WAM indicates model however I don't know what specific model...

What are you trying to install this 700R4 into? A Corvette or a Squarebody truck?

Here's a break out of the casting numbers and their respective meanings:

A "K" case has a thicker flange that the dust shield bolts on to. I think That k case was a
HD truck trans. Good starter trans for a beefy build.

I also am having a hard time finding a chart with the 700R4 codes. My transmission code is: 4IK280D, I know everything but the IK code. Can anyone tell me what the IK code is please? It is in my 1987 R10 that I had for years thinking it was the original tranny, until I went to upgrade it. After trying to install an incorrect tc I discovered it was most certainly not the original tranny. Thank you.

What was wrong with the converter that made it incorrect for the transmission? Was it set up for a 27-spline input shaft instead of a 30-spline?

If so, your 700R4 is an early 1984 unit. Late '84 saw the intro of the 30-spline input shaft, "152" drum casting, large-dia stator shaft and new torque converter designed to mate with these other new parts. Both of these transmissions are "non-aux valve body" units

You should have an "aux valve body" 700R4 with a second design main valve body and spacer plate as well as an "097" forward drum and 29-element forward sprag...

Jgonick, It is possible that the code is 41K280D but from what I read the second and third characters are letters not Numbers. If you zoom in, it kinda looks like it could be a 4 but it is different than the first four. Nick Transmissions, I had the transmission rebuilt by my local tranny shop about 9 years ago and he didn't say anything about it being an older tranny. Recently the truck started demonstrating signs of a bad torque converter so I replaced it. I, of course, ordered one for a 30 spline. Went to install it and upon trying to get the three clunks immediately new something wasn't right. Long story short I installed a new 27 spline, after running the code, and it is working good now. I am just wanting to find out more about this tranny. I am the type of guy that likes to know as much about my vehicles as possible. Let me know what you think the code is. Thank you guys for the help.
