6X9 Speakers

Anyone install 6X9 speakers in their stock rear corner mounts behind the seat? If you did, how did you install them?

I looked all the way back to the 2015 threads on putting different speakers in the stock rear corner brackets, but no definite threads on if any has done this and how.

Part of the problem of the stock bracket is the size of speaker magnet it will allow. Back in '89 I had a stereo installed in my K20. I wanted to put aftermarket 4x10's in the stock brackets, but the magnets hit the cab corners, so I installed 6x9's with new brackets.

In my '85, I did 6x9's, with brackets from 73-87.com. I think Brother's is selling them now too.

What fits in the stock brackets? Reasonably well.
Still have the Oe covers on as well.

I used Kicker 3.5" 2-ways in the dash corners and mounted them under the bracket to add clearance for the dash pad. I did trim the screws after the picture was taken. The center of the dash will hold a 4x10" speaker.

If a center 4x10 speaker is connected with the front corner speakers, would you lose the left to right balance (stereo effect) ?

If you use one of the RetroSound 4x10's with the dual voice coil, no. I'm looking at supplementing my system with one of these. There is a dead spot in the center of the cab for mid's and highs. I have looked on line and I think I have figured out how to keep a 4 ohm system without having to add a separate amp to run the center speaker. It seems you run the positive from one side of the stereo to one speaker, then the negative of that speaker to the next speaker's positive. Lastly the negative of speaker 2 to the stereo.

My system needs some more bass. My last square had 4 6x9's (2 in the doors, 2 in the cab corners). I can't do that in my '85 as I have power windows. RetroSound makes a powered 8" sub-woofer I'll add under the seat after I paint the truck. Not looking to thump, just a fuller sound.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m looking to do, a little more bass. So the sub-woofer needs a power booster?

No, theirs has a built in 100 watt amp. Hook it up to the battery and your RCA outputs.

I know a pic is worth a thousand words but my truck is home right now and I'm not.

I'll just say that I'm in the process of adding a 12 or 15 inch sub to my system. I currently have two 11" subs behind the seat along with two 160 watt amps (RMS) on the back wall. 6.5', 3" and tweets up front.

The sound is amazing! All focal expert series speakers and audio control eq and epicenter digital processer.

But...It lacks the low, shake your bellyfat kind of bass I'm looking for.

But that's gonna change. Stay tuned! Pics coming soon.

Did the dash pad lay as flat as it was originally when reinstalled?

i made a set of speaker boxes for my truck. Lumber was cheap and I made sure it had a good seal against the cab corner, resulting in better sound coming out of the speakers.

I haven't re-installed the dash since installing the speakers. When I do, it should clear. I had measured the stock speakers before I removed them from the brackets. With installing the new speakers to the underside of the bracket they are only 1mm taller than OEM.
