If built correctly, the 700R4 can handle big block 454s assuming they aren't putting out more than about 550TQ...I know this for a fact as appx 10% of all my 700R4s have gone into big blocks and they've held up just fine...In stock form, I'd not recommend sticking a 700 behind one but my base 700R4 rebuilds aren't strictly stock and only need a couple things beyond what I already do to handle one (Sonnax smart shell, 8 or 9 clutch 3-4 stack being the main mods). I've also used five pinion gear sets from 4L65Es in some of those builds but not others as the 4-pinion sets are actually more resilient than most realize.I don't think a 700R4 can handle the torque that a 454 will produce. I would get a Turbo 400 instead. And with tires that big, you are going to have to use much deeper gearing. Maybe around 4:10, or else 1st gear will be much too tall.

Once you get north of that ~550-575 neighborhood in terms of torque and/or HP, then it's time for a 4L80E...
