In the early dacades of the small block, there was often no exhaust manifold gaskets installed from the factory.

Well this block was made in 1974 for a police car so idk if it originally had them or not but it will be getting them as soon as possible

Bad intake manifold gasket?

I never seen them on there... so I’m guessing it didn’t have them when that guy put the engine in the Jimmy I took it out of

Yeah. I’m sure there’s a lot of issues unknown but I can’t afford to fix it for long term right now

Maybe we can get a government grant to study the situation.

What’s the best valve cover gasket material? Rubber, cork, or composite?

Its all matter of opinion, I have never had luck getting cork to seal so I use rubber gaskets, GM also got away from using cork.

I've always had good luck with cork. I use gasket sealer between the valve covers and gaskets, and grease the side that goes to the heads.

See that’s what I was thinking cause I know one person that never uses cork for the same reason. That’s why I was thinking of the rubber.

I've had issues with both types actually. It really comes down to making sure you don't over tighten the bolts on the valve covers. The heads on these have a strange ridge that can split the gasket if you aren't careful. Also if possible make sure you have the little "wings" to help put even pressure on the gasket to ensure proper sealing if the covers are bent or something similar.

Check to see if the PCV valve is clear and clean. small price but can cause build up of crank case pressure and cause oil to be pushed out the gaskets.
