On some newer engines they have gone one step further and used Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) to inject the gas directly into the cylinder - which means only the air stream is moving past the valves.

However, one downside of GDI is that the gas/air mixture is no longer passing around/through the valves, so you don't get any natural cleansing action from the gasoline and its additives.
Ford had to add port injectors to its Eco boost DI engines. Why? Carbon builds up. Most of the race shops are adding a second fuel system and port injectors on the newer DI engines like the LT's. It much simpler than trying to get more fuel out of the engine driven pumps. I think we have reached the point of diminishing returns for the cost and complexity of the new engines in the terms of horsepower and mileage. They are awesome but at quite a cost.
