Like said before D44 wont hold up with those tires and gears. The term crawler is being used as in even if you never let it get dirty and only cruise the MALL you will still break axles and gears.

Even if the axle shafts survive, the bearings in the D44 will HATE a 46" tire.

I would try to find a ford high pinion 60 for the front and a 14ff for the rear. You may want to look at the NP205 as well. the 208 won't hold up long if you're playing. def look into crossover steering. Stock style steering won't hold up long with 46's

This is the same setup I have on mine, works great. I'm running 44 inch tires with 18 inches of lift. I have a build album on here if you would like to see how i did my truck.

Nice build. Did you fab up your track bar on the front or is it a kit. What springs are you running on your truck. They don't look like they have much arch for 18" of lift. Looks very driveable.

Thank you. The track bar is a top link from Tractor Supply. All the brackets were fabbed by me. The springs are Superlift 8 inch lift rear springs on the front and back. The use of rear springs on the front yields about 4 inches more lift than on the back and ride a little better. On the back I used the 8 inch springs and a shackle flip with 7 inch long shackles. All the spring hangers on the front were dropped 4 inches from where the factory hangers were. Had to put a 3 inch bodylift on because the front tires were to close to the fenders at full turn. The front wheels only have about 2 inches of back spacing so the tires will clear the springs in a turn. The front axle is a Dana 60 from a Ford F350 so the spring perches are spaced wider than a Chevy axle. The truck is very driveable.

nice setup. I never thought about running rear springs up front but it sounds like a good idea. Thanks.

On a 12" lift I'd look into a dropbox over a doubler(203/205) setup. You can get the gearing you need thru the box to match up with your axles for play or highway as they are quick change gears. It also reduces driveline angles which helps u-jouints last longer.

As for the axles Im with everybody else, go bigger. The D60 front will be sufficent and a 14BFF or D70 in the rear. The 14bff is a very strong axle and even though it doesn't allow for as much gear, when coupled with the drop box it wouldn't be an issue anyway.

the other solution to this problem would be more HP.

just signed up and am looking for a little advice on my 1973 k25 project. i'm lifting the truck 12" and putting 46x15x20 tires on it. my problem is
1) i have the 14 bolt rearend and i cant find a set of gears over 5.38. im thinking about putting a underdrive kit on, and either 4.88 or 5.38 gears but dont no alot about underdrives.
2) does anyone no what kind of back space and offset i would need to be able to run 46x15x20's. im already going to put cutout fender flares on it. just dont want to hit the springs or anything.

if anyone has any advice i would appreciate it. thanx

Not to be rude but a D44 will never hold up to those kinda tires in anything other then mall crawling unless you spend major money on it which by the time its strong enough you could have a D60

Actually, running 46's on a d60 is kinda pushing it if you play hard. That's the minimum that you want though is the d60. Build it with 35-spline, hardened axles and stuff if you plan on playing hard.

You need a proper underdrive like found in a motorhome if you want to drive this thing on the road.

I would run a Dana 70 rear axle and a Dana 60 upfront with chromaloy axle shafts Then your trucks axles will work great. The Dana 70 can get some really low gear ratios. Now on the transfer case i would run a np205 doubler if you keep those gears. This will cost a lot but when you are done you will not be worrying about it.
