1986 Chevy c10 stalls in gear until warm (even on hot mornings)

I’m not sure, but I was under the impression since I just changed the oil like 3 months prior that the oil would be fine. But it was indeed about 1.5-2 quarts low. When I had the manifold cover off, the rods were spitting oil just fine though so it never occurred to me it was low. I guess when I...

1986 Chevy c10 stalls in gear until warm (even on hot mornings)

Well, I did the vac advance to full vacuum test and brought it back down to 12° initial, tinkered with the idle mixture screws a little to make her clean up a bit also did an oil change. Was quite a bit low. Didn’t realize how much she burned during this process. and wouldn’t ya know the next...

1986 Chevy c10 stalls in gear until warm (even on hot mornings)

Thanks for the vid! That’s exactly what I’m hoping for! If it’s already warm, that’s about how it goes. Except for the priming. If it’s warmed up I can just turn the key and she starts and drives. I’m definitely getting a tach. I wonder if they make one that fits the clock “gauge” in the cluster...

1986 Chevy c10 stalls in gear until warm (even on hot mornings)

Okay will do! After messing around with it today (taking the pics, checking the advance and replacing both door jamb switches to find out someone had installed a single post bulb in the cargo light…) i took it for a spin and I did notice some pinging near wot so I brought it back down to about...

Yes, vacuum advance to full manifold increases idle significantly. I’d say probably 200 rpm increase. Here’s a better pic of the full deal.

About to try the vacuum advance to full manifold.

I’m still at work so I can’t check the actual model but it looks like this one and the rotor on the inside is a red brick of plastic. Not the kind with the two metal “crab claw” centrifugal weights.

You also mentioned the egr valve. I assumed this later model just didn’t have one but it seems someone did a delete on it before I’m the truck was in my hands. Should I add one if so?

Yeah, sorry. He did replace it. So the distributor and carb were replaced within a week or two from each other. Every since we’ve had this cold start issue. I’ve done too much since then to recall everything but mostly just went through distributor timing and the carb adjustments/rebuild and...

1986 Chevy c10 stalls in gear until warm (even on hot mornings)

I can’t say I’ve seen this switch. I’ll take a look and a few pictures when I get home from work. As well as testing the vacuum advance with manifold vacuum. Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it. I got it last year around this time. At first it started fine and I don’t recall ever...

1986 Chevy c10 stalls in gear until warm (even on hot mornings)

I’m sure my fuel pressure is fine. My front float sunk last week and it spouted about 2-3 inches out the bowl vent. Did a full rebuild but still grumpy until hot.

Got it! I’ll post results asap! Glad you got yours sorted. Haha. Also there’s this odd canister on my exhaust that isn’t hooked up. Seems vacuum activated maybe a restrictor of some sort to create back pressure?

so I’m guessing it didn’t “start, idle and drive away without hesitation?”

1986 Chevy c10 stalls in gear until warm (even on hot mornings)

I feel stupid that I don’t know how to edit old replies for more info but when I saw it advance before, it was while the vacuum advance was disconnected for initial timing. I now see the edit option. :)

Although I do recall seeing it advance while revving. Could this be just the mechanical advance though?

1986 Chevy c10 stalls in gear until warm (even on hot mornings)

Got ya. That’s what I was thinking of doing next. Just haven’t gotten to it. I thought of doing it to see if it would help at idle but it totally makes sense to do it to check the vacuum advances functionality to begin with. Thanks! I’ll make another reply with results after work tomorrow.

1986 Chevy c10 stalls in gear until warm (even on hot mornings)

As far as timing goes I had it up to 22° initial and got pinging (I think… gravel shaking in a bottle sound) at WOT so I put it back down a few because it didn’t feel right. The vacuum advance does work. But with the hose I had to kinda use my tongue as a check valve and really add up the...

1986 Chevy c10 stalls in gear until warm (even on hot mornings)

Okay, let me know how it goes. Haha. Also forgot to mention I’m certain it’s not a vacuum leak. Replaced most lines and the others were perfect. I also saw you can adjust the vacuum advance? When I got this carb off the old man I bought it from he told me to hook the vacuum advance up to ported...

Oil temp giraffe was a typo but funny so I left it in. (Oil temp gauge)

1986 Chevy c10 stalls in gear until warm (even on hot mornings)

I have a 1985 Chevy c10/Silverado with a 350cfm and a 600 holley vacuum secondary. Hei distributor at about 16° BTDC idle timing. Any less advance and it won’t idle worth anything. 19 psi on the vacuum gauge at idle (haven’t checked vacuum at idle in gear yet but plan on it.) anyways, this truck...
