I hate the power window and door lock switches

I have bad luck with crimps so I tend to go for the solder+shrinkwrap approach. A good crimp is every bit as solid and reliable (and really better from a vibration perspective) - I just do not have the hand strength to get the kind of crimp you'd get at the factory and the handles on the tool...

    Beginner Alternator Question

Before junking the alternator, I'd check to make sure the exciter wire is in fact exciting the windings. From personal experience, this is a real possibility. I had mine go to a no-charge situation after replacing the distributor. It turns out whoever owned this truck before me (who should...

Cold air at my feet and not to much in my face. Also no defrost...WTF

I had the same problem when I first got mine so I'm betting on the vacuum line to be the issue. The hard plastic vacuum line had broken right where it goes into the firewall from the engine compartment - there was enough of a stub to sneak a small rubber vauum hose onto and make the connection...

TBI symptoms changed (new thread to reflect new problems)

I like those top creepers - my friend Dave had one but I didn't try to buy it from the estate. It wouldn't have helped me all that much since I only have a mud/dirt driveway (no paved parking area or actual garage) to work on, but on a smooth hard surface it was ideal. I may try your...

TBI symptoms changed (new thread to reflect new problems)

I assume doing this experiment will require disconnecting the 4 pin module connector at the distributor AND the 2 very large connectors on the ECU itself? It will probably be a week or so before I can dig into this but I am certainly saving these suggestions and information to use the next time...

TBI symptoms changed (new thread to reflect new problems)

I think you are correct on this one - and after dealing with British electricals for years I have learned to always question the grounds and never directly trust the body to be a good ground (or a trailer frame, especially a boat trailer). I'm out of my territory so to speak on this one...

TBI symptoms changed (new thread to reflect new problems)

I do have another unused new cap that I can swap on in place of the one that came with the distributor. Since it was well after dark when I got home I was able to open the engine compartment and look for any arcing on the high-voltage plug/coil wires. Did not see any but that doesn't always...

TBI symptoms changed (new thread to reflect new problems)

I started a new thread because the previous one where we were trying to solve random shut-offs may no longer be relevant... Over the weekend I had an out of town music job which meant I needed to run the 1989 Suburban out there (about 70 miles each way). After replacing the fuel pump relay...

It dies suddenly, as if the key had been shut off (except all the instruments continue showing readings). My truck didn't come equipped with a tach so don't know what does or doesn't happen on that tach send wire of the coil when it dies. If it dies while actually driving at a decent speed...

I don't always have good luck with these online systems - they seem to expect that I have much newer equipment than I actually have in a lot of cases, but this is an attempt at loading an image....

87' R10 TBI 350 shuts off when driving. HeLP

These are all sound ideas, which unfortunately I had already investigated. The new distributor came with a new cap and rotor, and since I had a spare unused ICM handy (purchased prior to discovering the actual bad pickup coil in the original distributor), I tossed that in (and yes I used high...

When logic and reason fail, sometimes the WAG is all we have left. Either that or appealing to supernatural powers. I'm kind of to that point on this one. Even British car electricals obey the laws of physics and cause-effect relationships.

I just signed up today - although I've been reading and educating myself from the posts here for a while. I normally have had other brand vehicles and the 1989 Suburban is the 1st GM vehicle I've owned, so the learning curve has been interesting although until last year I had a friend who was a...

87' R10 TBI 350 shuts off when driving. HeLP

This thread is near and dear to my heart because my 1989 suburban (R2500/TH400/454) has started doing pretty much the same thing. I had to replace the whole distributor 3 months ago because the pickup coil was bad (no spark no fuel pulse) and it was in rough shape inside (corrosion), so it has...
