‘87 454 TBI, NO Fuel spray, HAS fuel pressure, has 12v @ injectors, has spark

Yeah, I’m a little leery of frying the ecu. I have a fluke that has a simulated analog output (bar graph on the bottom of the screen), I’d think it’s pretty well buffered to stop you damaging things you are taking readings of. If the pulses are pretty slow I should be able to watch the...

‘87 454 TBI, NO Fuel spray, HAS fuel pressure, has 12v @ injectors, has spark

I built a device to pull and reset the blink codes on my w124 Mercedes, I bet it might work fit this. Looks like pin 4 is the data out, I’ll look into that more. Or I could get a cheapy flash reader, but I was looking at Amazon and they seemed hit or miss. One might say “73 to 95 chevy” and...

‘87 454 TBI, NO Fuel spray, HAS fuel pressure, has 12v @ injectors, has spark

The truck physically has no check engine light. Not no light flashes, there is no light actually present on the vehicle, so I can’t short pins and get a light that is not physically there to flash. I have felt up behind the speedo and there are openings, but no bulb, no bulb holder, no wires.

There is no check engine light. The ALDL connector must have a pin that sends +12v out to a reader. If I knew which pin I could hook up a light.

I removed and put back the main battery ground and the lights, etc., came back. Still zero fuel spray. There is no check engine light (at least that I can see when ignition is turned to ON or feeling behind dash for a loose bulb. I have the bezel off and am going to pull the cluster to see...

‘87 454 TBI, NO Fuel spray, HAS fuel pressure, has 12v @ injectors, has spark

You wouldn’t happen to have that handy, or a link? I just found a site with service manuals, but it only has 1986 and 1988. Not sure which is more in line with 1987 since that seemed to be the year things changed...

‘87 454 TBI, NO Fuel spray, HAS fuel pressure, has 12v @ injectors, has spark

Will check in a bit. One other clue that I’m looking into now is there are no interior lights or headlights either. Pulled and metered every fuse, all read intact.

‘87 454 TBI, NO Fuel spray, HAS fuel pressure, has 12v @ injectors, has spark

Drove the truck for an hour to pick up my kids Sunday. Turned truck off, kids put their stuff in, daughter went to start truck literally 2 mins after I turned it off and it would crank fine, but not a hint of fire. Ended up having to get it towed home. There is ZERO fuel from the injectors...

1987 454 TBI down on power, runs good otherwise

Some videos, hopefully you can hear it. I couldn’t find anywhere within an hour drive with new (non rebuilt) injectors. Anyone have suggestions on a good place to order injectors/rebuild kit from?

1987 454 TBI down on power, runs good otherwise

I’ll try to get a video driving it. It pretty much just peters out and stops accelerating (if you have it in 1 manually, or top gear and are accelerating gently on the gas pedal). As you keep pressing the gas more (in D and at highway speed), it kicks down happily and readily, but there is...

1987 454 TBI down on power, runs good otherwise

I watched the injectors revving the throttle by hand. Passenger side looks not as good, but not god-aweful enough so the engine only makes 75 hp or so. How do I upload videos on here? (Figured it out)

Looks kinda sketch. Broken clip, different color wires….. thoughts?

Yes, looks like stock manifolds with all new true dual piping back to tail pipes.

Yeah, my fuel pressure test kit is just long enough to reach in to the passenger floor (when hooked to filter location) is why I need an extra person to read while driving. Fuel filter looks new, and threads clean, but I didn’t replace it.

1987 454 TBI down on power, runs good otherwise

Yeah, I’ll try to put the gauge back on and read at speed. Probably can’t this weekend as I won’t have a second person to help me. I just drove it to work and back (110 mile round trip) and I may be back on it being an engine issue vs trans. It pulls away great from a stop at about half...

I can manually run through the gears like that and it shifts perfectly fine. Can’t tell you rpms though. You can manually downshift fine too, as long as it doesn’t spike the rpm’s/you don’t mash the gas after downshifting.

1987 454 TBI down on power, runs good otherwise

There’s no tach, but you can be doing 55 and floor it and it won’t go anywhere. You can do the same thing in any gear. If it downshifts and revs go up past a certain point (or you are trying to put too much power through trans it seems) it won’t accelerate. At any speed. As long as you’re...

1987 454 TBI down on power, runs good otherwise

I think it’s because if you drive it almost normally you don’t notice the issue. You have to give it some gas. So maybe the guy put it back in and puttered around and was like “seems good”. I mean it is nice and solid pulling away, and shifts really nicely up the gears. Not harsh, zero...

1987 454 TBI down on power, runs good otherwise

TH400, sorry. Odo reads 80K. The guy I bought it from (guy has a shop, all the cool toys, etc., so works on stuff) said he had bought it for his son and went to preemptively service the trans (since he didn’t know what shape the truck was in, even tho it’s super clean) and dropped the pan and...

1987 454 TBI down on power, runs good otherwise

Does the same thing in each gear. Fine at low/part throttle until revs get higher, then slips. Trans was supposed rebuilt only a few dozen miles before I bought it. Trans is spotless/freshly painted. Fluid is perfect, not a hint of discoloration and zero burnt smell at all. I have not...

Only 3 speed. Acts the same in every gear, fine at part throttle, slips past that point.

1987 454 TBI down on power, runs good otherwise

Anyone know how to tell if it’s the torque converter or clutch packs in the trans slipping? I’m a manual trans guy so haven’t ever delved into autos. Fluid looks great and doesn’t smell burnt. But I’ve been driving in gently, keeping it out of the rpm ranges it slips. I’ve probably put...
