    Forum newbie

Great find. I worked for an auto dealer back when these trucks were new. They were a hot item then and still are now. I would say that's a pretty good indication of how popular they were (are).

    coolant leak new heads

Yeah, it could be the intake gasket. It is pretty easy to let them slip while installing the intake when the engine is in the truck. Hate to hear your having such bad luck with it. Did it have any water in the oil when you had the old heads on it?

    gas tank sending unit

One option here is to isolate the pump from the frame by mounting it with a piece if rubber between the pump and frame. Might be worth a try and would definitly be easier. Just a thought.

    coolant leak new heads

The engine being 30 over shouldn't be the problem. Did you drain the oil after changing the gaskets? It could have gotten the coolant in the oil when you removed the heads. Get the casting number from the heads and look it up. Some of the GM castings were crack prone if they have ever been run hot.

    Pushrod length madness

Not sure what your solution is going to be but with the valve lash set, I'm assuming it's zero lash being "hyd" roller lifters, I would make sure the valve geometry is correct since you are using roller tip rockers. Have you checked it with one of the hyd roller lifters installed?

    Advice on starter issue

I've had this same issue with re-man starters. I've heard of people having to shim starters before but in my years of wrenching I've never had to use shims. I've replaced a lot of starters on mobile equipment and when this problem arises I always install another starter.

    Turn signals wont work...?

Yellow to left turn signal. Green to right turn signal. Light green to reverse lights. Brown to tail, side marker lights and tag lights. All Blacks to body ground. If all wiring is correct. Check fuses. Check flashers(turn and hazard). If all are good, it probably has a bad turn signal/horn...

    Oil pressure gauge pegged out

Check and make sure the wire(s) are hooked to the sendor unit. It should be on the left(driver side) of the dist. It could be at the oil filter too. No 100% sure on your engine but at one of the locations.

    electric choke?

You can also run a wire to it. It needs to come from a 12 volt source that is switched on with the key switch.

One more thing to consider is replacing the engine and tranny mounts with some polyurethane mounts. I didn't do it to start with and ended up doing it after I installed the engine. Mine has clam shell mounts and it was a real PITA with the engine installed.

You won't need the valve if you are using a mechanical pump. I'm using the in tank pump which is for the TBI. Since it pumps 9 to 13 psi, the regulator/bypass valve allows me to turn the pressure down for the carb, and have a return line for the excess pressure.

If you are replacing your fuel tank and using a mechanical pump, of coarse yours will be different. You will probably put all new lines from the tank to the carb. Just be aware of where you route them. Keep them away from heat sources(exhaust) and keep them from rubbing on frame(etc).

Fuel supply goes into the fuel rail a the rear of carb. Flows to front into bypass valve and then out of bottom of bypass valve and returns...

I read the specs on the engine. High lift roller/hyd cam. 10:1 compression. 5800 rpm. Yeah it needs the 750 carb. Also recommends 92 octain fuel. You will need at least a 2500rpm stall converter also. I have a 700r4 tranny with a little more power than this engine that had 102k when I installed...

I was assuming you would be using the OEM electric pump. If your using the mechanical pump then no regulator is needed. I have an old style engine in my 92 and I'm still using the in-tank pump. I put a block off plate on the mechanical pump provision. Sounds like you have a good plan on your...

    Key switch to starter ??

I think you should have a purple wire coming from the clutch switch to the "S" terminal on the starter solenoid. This should be the only wire on the "S" terminal.

    carb upgrade question

Here is a write up on what it does. A lot of people block them off. It may give you a small increase in power because of blocking extra heat from entering the intake. Cooler air is denser creating more power. When combustion temperatures exceed 2500 degree F., atmospheric nitrogen begins to...

It should be a direct replacement. If the crate engine is carb'd you will need a fuel pressure bypass regulator and need to modify fuel lines. Your 87 is a TBI right??
