    Getting the shaft...

Ha! Big difference, then. Although I have family not far from the PA border in upstate NY. Still beautiful country...

    Getting the shaft...

Damn! That’s chilly. Colorado is pretty nice, though. Beautiful state. I’ll stick with this weather for now, thanks.

    Getting the shaft...

We won’t see highs in the 70’s for another month or so. Definitely nothing to worry about:

    Getting the shaft...

They get here on Wednesday... I still need to drop the hammer on the parts for the ‘burb swap, so it’ll have to wait. I’ve been going back and forth about what direction to take, and the *responsible* family-first route is the way to go for now...

    Getting the shaft...

Ha! Nice reference. They’re a bit on in age, it’s Arizona winter, and they’re British. While it may be novel for a trip or two, they want to go to California over the Christmas holidays... I don’t think they’d make it to Palm Springs in the bed of the pickup ;)

    Getting the shaft...

That’d make sense, right? But, my in laws are coming to visit for three months and we need a family hauler... My wife’s Jeep won’t cut it, and we only have the three vehicles.

    Getting the shaft...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. It’s a fair amount of distance between the trans cross member and the rear crossmember. I’d be interested in a shot of the underside of a Suburban that came with a factory 1 piece driveshaft to see what GM did. I was thinking about just fabricating one from...

    Getting the shaft...

Well, everything is prepped for the new driveshaft... But not without a hitch. My air chisel bit the dust, so I had to cut out the crossmember. I’ll go back and finish removing the rivets at some point so i can get those little ends of the crossmember out, some day. Got the exhaust all laid...

    Getting the itch again.....

Definitely NOT nuts, man. This is on my commute, so I see it twice a day. ‘91 560SEL, running and driving for $2200. If my red truck hadn’t died, I was going to pick this up and park it for the next project. LSA supercharged 5.3 w/ a T56, a badass roadtrippin’ powerhouse for the times when my...

    Getting the shaft...

I’ve wondered the same thing @Boonie and @skysurfer I’ve never had a problem or issue with carrier bearings on other vehicles, and didn’t have any issue with this ‘burb’s until some shoddy/questionable driveshaft work. I let myself get talked out of doing it when I did the swap to a 700R4, and...

    Getting the shaft...

Well, this weekend is prep weekend for the new driveshaft. Placed the order today on a 5” aluminum shaft with billet ends, spicer joints, and chromemoly yoke. The torque rating on the 5'' aluminum tube is 7300 lb/ft and at the built length. Critical speed should be approx. 6800 - 7200 rpm...

What have you done to your square lately??

Pulled the driveshafts and carrier out of my Suburban yesterday. Made a dumb ass mistake, too: forgot to set the parking brake and didn’t chock the wheels. I’m blaming the whiskey hangover for my oversight. Laying on my back in the driveway with half my body under the truck, I Kung-Fu gripped...

What new tools have you got lately?

The mini metal saw from Eastwood. A “cold cut” carbide blade saw for steel. This saw kicks major ass for only $80. No sparks, super precise and straight cuts, and well balanced.

    87' TBI timing question

Yep, i just thought the same thing as @4WDKC Coil and distributor. The HEI module would be a place to start, all the way out to the coil. I use Pertronix flame throwers on all my HEIs. Check your timing light on another vehicle just to eliminate that as a contributor to diagnosis issues as...

    NEWBIE

Welcome! That’s a sweet ride, nice and clean. I imagine mine looked a bit like that 30 years and 256,000 miles ago!

    Getting the shaft...

Yea, the first carrier bearing and housing was the original one. 150k or so on it. Did the trans swap, and the driveshaft work was suspect. Blew the housing out on that bearing. Now, new bearing did the same thing; bearing is fine, it just pulled the rubber isolator apart allowing the shafts to...

    Getting the shaft...

Well, things were going great with both of my squares, progress was being made on refining and upgrading everything, and then the sh!t hit the fan this past weekend... My pickup has a terminally ill 305 now that I don’t have time to diagnose because my beloved ‘burb has ANOTHER carrier bearing...

    NP833 to T56

It looks like the McLeod adapter 82-1001 that will allow me to move the shifter up to the front position with a little bit of internal work. Nothing too crazy, though. Heck, I can get the whole shebang for $400 from Silver Sport: https://shiftsst.com/store/t56-front-shift-kit.html From there...

    NP833 to T56

Yea, my big concern is the transmission... I'm seeing midshift kits available, but I was hoping to hear from someone who had done a swap in a 4 speed truck to a T56 regarding fitment. I don't want to cut the hump up. The Camaro engine is a 5.7 TPI, so maybe the T5 was swapped in before the car...

    NP833 to T56

Well, I've been trolling my local yards and Craigslist since returning home from the big road trip with an eye out on upgrades for my little red '87 (shortbed 1/2 ton with a 305 and NPA833) and I found three local possibilities for a quick and easy swap: Two LT1/T56 pulls complete with ECMs and...

Manual Clutch Fan To Automatic Fan Concerns

You have a clutch fan on that truck, not a fixed fan, right? If some PO put a fixed fan on there, that's a power drain, for sure. Clutch fans, though, aren't so bad... There have been dyno comparisons, and a gain of 10 HP or more may be a realistic, and even more if you do have a fixed fan...
