    Charging a new A/C system

This is some awesome info guys, much appreciated! My compressor is a new (not reman) Advance Auto brand (ToughOne) model that says it is pre-oiled. Should I drain it and add the total correct amount of oil, or leave it be and add a few ounces more based on the above recommendations? What PAG...

    Charging a new A/C system

So to get back on track with the thread... I am running R134. I really need to know the correct capacity and how much oil to use. Like I say, I've never charged an A/C system myself before so any kind of walkthrough help would be awesome.

    Charging a new A/C system

I'm in the process of finishing up the rebuild of my A/C system. This will be a 100% new system. Evap, comp, cond, lines, hoses, etc. all replaced. I plan to attempt charging the system myself. I can rent the gauges and vacuum pump at AutoZone, and know the basics of how to use them. My...

    TH400 slushy shifting.

You have the option. I like the 1-2 kit as it has a lot more options and upgrades, particularly if you are rebuilding the transmission, and not just doing a valve body refresh. I chose to keep the standard auto shifting with my build, and it has worked well for me.

    TH400 acting oddly

You really need to do the pressure checks. The symptoms you are mentioning are kinda all over the place. Is it a linkage problem? Is it a pressure problem? Is it just a worn-out transmission? We need some hard data to move forward.

    TH400 acting oddly

Sorry if I missed it, but how many miles are on that trans? I'd be concerned about the constant flushing if it has a lot of miles on it. You may be flushing what little friction material is left right out of it. I tried that on a Dodge a few years ago. It was just fine, but (being new to...

Ideas for fuel mileage - underdrive pulley? electric fan?

Yeah I decided to rebuild the carb to be ethanol friendly, and it did not go well. This was my second carb, and the first one went just fine. That car runs like a raped ape. For some reason this one is just a giant pain in my ass. My plan with that is try doing some real tuning when I have a...

Ideas for fuel mileage - underdrive pulley? electric fan?

I'm looking to get a few extra mpgs out of the dooley. Right now I probably get about 5-7mpg, even running 50/50 city/highway. I've already got an oversize open air filter (no housing etc), true dual exhaust (stock manifolds though), de-smogged, rebuilt carb (with some choke issues - don't...

    TH400 acting oddly

Wow, very interesting. Glad you got it fixed. Vacuum leaks can cause funky symptoms I guess. I'd love to know how they caused the creeping etc. issues you experienced. Well done! Goes to show with troubleshooting you start with the cheapest and easiest!

    TH400 acting oddly

See this really point me back to the TC again. Think about it, if the TC is full of junk and getting itself out of balance and/or changing the stall speed, it could make it creep, and I would definitely think it would act up in reverse. I cannot think of anything engine related that would cause...

    TH400 acting oddly

I've done the same without much issue. I need to replace my distributor because the weights are all rusty and I think they are sticking. All that does is give me some ping under WoT operations though. Are you sure the fuel tank/system is all good to go? Are you sure all of the rubber fuel lines...

Driveline Vibration. U-Joints, Carrier Bearing, and Output shaft Bushing Replaced.

I second the torque converter bolting. I rebuilt my TH400 and put a reman converter on it with a new flexplate. Started getting a nasty vibration at 60+mph. A real vroooommmm vroooooommm vroooooommmm sorta thing. Turns out either the converter or the flexplate are out of balance. I rotated the...

    TH400 acting oddly

Would a bad torque converter cause all of this? What trans do you have?

What belt do I need to remove the air pump?

Damn dude. That's an old post you dug up there. Glad it was of use to you though!

Q-Jet Choke housing re-install keeps binding up?

So I had a bit of a relapse for a bit. Suddenly the truck started running like crap again, but after scratching the ol nugget and the old meat and two vedge I realized I made a whoopsie. I forgot to tighten down the distributor. So I re-timed the engine and dropped in the smaller secondary...

Q-Jet Choke housing re-install keeps binding up?

Interesting. I was not aware of this. I'll make sure I don't go hurkin on the wingnut then. ...which sounds like a candidate from the GMSB quotes thread...

Q-Jet Choke housing re-install keeps binding up?

Ok I'm back. Finally got the truck running right. I had a whole bunch of problems. Ended up buying a new rebuild kit from Cliff Ruggles - what a difference. First, the needle and seat that came in the first kit were too small. I actually measured this with numbered drill bits and found that...

86 454 T400 out of Motorhome with 32,000 miles for $600 "SHOULD I DO IT"

I went through this a couple summers ago. Went down to the woods and pulled a 454 out of an old RV and stuffed it in my Camaro. It was the craziest redneck crap I've ever done, but I ended up with a solid 454 with 60k on it. Runs like a raped ape in the Camaro. Be ready to do a little refresh...

Q-Jet Choke housing re-install keeps binding up?

Yeah I didn't even think about it the first time. When I rebuilt the quad on my Camaro I did not have any of these problems. The splined arm did not fall of the shaft on that one though, so the orientation/alignment was easy. On this one I actually had to put a very thin washer between the lever...

Q-Jet Choke housing re-install keeps binding up?

Well I took the carb back off the truck last night. I've got a set of 74 jets on the way to up-size from the 73s. I'm hoping that might help with my pinging issue. I also took another look at the choke arms/linkages. Everything I am seeing tells me that it should all be working correctly. No...

JB Weld it, grab a beer, and throw it together! If this engine ran, yours will too!

Q-Jet Choke housing re-install keeps binding up?

Well I looked on youtube and found some good shots of the choke shaft to lever orientation. It looks as though it should be set up so that the choke arm lever (the PITA one that goes inside the carb that engages the shaft) should be pointed to around the 1-2 o'clock position when installed. I...

Q-Jet Choke housing re-install keeps binding up?

I just finished up rebuilding the quadrajet on the truck. This is my second rebuild of a qjet, so I've been in these things before. Before the rebuild, the carb ran fine and the choke was 100%, I only decided to rebuild with ethanol-friendly parts so I could run cheaper gas (70 cents/gal extra...
