Building a free LT1 for my Camaro

Time has passed and this is where I'm at: I've got a long way to go, but at least she's in there!

    Should I advance my cam?

A couple years ago I installed a COMP Cams Magnum 11-207-3 in my 454. The bottom end is stock, stock peanut heads, dual plane intake. Pretty stock motor other than the cam, intake, and headers and looow stock compression. I've never been too impressed with the performance post cam install. I...

Building a free LT1 for my Camaro

Yeah time has gotten away from you lol. The timing chain on the 454 in the truck let go about 2 years ago, so I pulled it then decided to pull the RV 454 out of the Camaro and drop it into the truck. Discovered after doing so that the block was cracked, so that came back out and the original...

Building a free LT1 for my Camaro

The build kit showed up last week, so now I've got to mock build everything and take a few measurements. I'm looking to deck the block so that the pistons are .014 in the hole. With a .026 shim gasket that will get my quench right at .040... perfect. With a Comp 08-443-8 cam that will get me a...

Building a free LT1 for my Camaro

HOWEVER... When I pulled the oil pan things got a bit... unsightly. Spun bearings EVERYWHERE. Fortunately it was all rod bearings and the mains were fine, so no issues with the main caps. SO what now? How about a stroker??? The standard bores cleaned up nice so it'll be a 377 with...

Building a free LT1 for my Camaro

"ran when pulled" Phrase of the day. Back in October I picked up a free LT1 long block. It had been sitting in a warehouse for quite a while and the owner wanted it gone. He said it ran when pulled, and when I dug into the top end I believed him. Clean. As. A. Whistle! No gunk, no carbon, Nice!

    Another AC Thread: Which compressor??

I have not had any trouble with the A6 I got from Advance. And if I ever do, the lifetime warranty will cover it. It was a simple thing to install. I can't really complain.

    transmission engine options

Shoot man. As long as it's the standard GM bellhousing you could put in anything from a 350 to an LT-1 to an 8.1L. Sky is the limit. They even make adapters for cummins motors. Your choice bud. I'd be more worried about motor mounts and clearances for that bigger stuff!

Looking to sound deaden your truck? Dynamat? watch this first.

Noico is decent stuff. I've used their butyl products on both the truck and my Camaro. In fact, I just got some more for a door job on the Camaro. Keep in mind mass-adding materials like this are only needed sparingly. Dynamat etc always show full-coverage applications, but it's really not...

What big block starter do you use?

Take my advice and don't buy cheap off brand starters. I bought two of them a few years back and they were noisy junk. I used both for cores on starters off of a 95 350 at Advance. Very nice little starters for the money, quiet, and crank that 454 like nobody's business! Oh, and lifetime...

    Terrible Gas Mileage

Hey, don't get too uppity about 7mpg! I celebrate when I get to 7. 8mpg is like a gift from the gods that I'm just not good enough to get!

Summit Carb Install Gone Very Wrong

Ha! I wondered if someone would catch that clamp. It's all I had when I did the hose and then I just forgot about it. Too funny man. And no, I'm not a Rabbi or even of that faith. It's actually a nickname I picked up as a kid. It's a twist on my name is all.

    Pair of Quadrajet Carbs

I've got 2 quadrajet carbs for sale. They are a little different from each other, so I'll try to outline them as best I can below. Price is $100 OBO each plus shipping. PM me if interested. If you want both we can work on price. First one is the original from my 86 C30 with the 454. It runs...

Summit Carb Install Gone Very Wrong

When I first got this truck years ago it ran great on the stock carb. It looked like it had never been touched. Unfortunately the ethanol in newer gas started to do it's thing and a rebuild was in order. I don't know why, but its never been the same since. It runs decent, but it can be rough to...

Summit Carb Install Gone Very Wrong

Got the new carb. Inspected it, the intake, and the gasket and all were flat. Test fitted it about 4 times and verified it sat flat with no rocking. Bolted it down without a hitch. Friggen weird right? Anyway all went well with the install. It fired right up, and from what I can tell I don't...

Summit Carb Install Gone Very Wrong

More than likely. I've generally been happy with Summit-branded stuff. The headers I've got on my truck now are theirs and I'll be honest - they are sweet. I'm thinking this is 99% of the problem right here. Too bad too because it is a nice looking carb. I just wish I could have afforded the...

Summit Carb Install Gone Very Wrong

Fuel line was floating completely free and I use a flex hose to connect to it, so nope. This is seriously weird dude!

Summit Carb Install Gone Very Wrong

My new Summit-brand 750cfm carb showed up this week, so I decided to work on the install yesterday. I will say this looked like a really nice carb. Simple design, looked like it was made well. The DVD instructions were helpful. The install was fairly simple. All went well until I went to...

    Need help on cleaning cowl

This is something I still need to do. I want to pull it and put a newer model in anyway. There was a thread on here at one point talking about putting a GMT800 (I think?) blower motor in. One from the 90s. Apparently it makes for a nice upgrade and increases airflow.

    Bench Seat Whole or Parts

I pulled my old bench seat out about 2 weeks ago in order to replace it with some aftermarket seats I picked up. It's now sitting in my garage and I can't really do anything with it. If you want it, its yours. Local pickup only for the complete seat. I'd also be willing to part it out. Tracks...

    Ordering new Seats

You know I really like them. I was skeptical after the issues I had with installation, but at the end of the day it actually worked out. I will say a couple of things though: 1. As with all aftermarket seats, they sit pretty high. The universal subframe design used by the manufacturer results...

    Ordering new Seats

Got the seats installed over the weekend. Had to work around the tropical storm that blew through, but no big deal. The reason it took a while to get the seats installed was because I ran into a few issues. 1. The brackets provided were too wide to use the existing seat bolt holes. I could...
