    86 suburban 2wd to 4wd

Been a while since I did an update. Even though I bought the 2wd to 4wd conversion kit, we decided to do a frame swap instead. The 2wd frame was more rusty than originally thought and the frame was turned into Swiss cheese with how many holes were drilled into it in the transmission cross member...

Fuel gauge to tachometer, clock to fuel gauge

Glowshift sells a small one that will fit if you cut the whole for it. I replaced everything but the fuel gauge. Put the tach in the lower right spot because it was easiest to see while driving.

    dash gauge bezel mods

I just posted about putting aftermarket gauges in stock bezel. Harder than I thought. Thread 'Aftermarket gauges in stock cluster' https://www.gmsquarebody.com/threads/aftermarket-gauges-in-stock-cluster.45699/

    Aftermarket gauges in stock cluster

I cut the clear plastic lens to protect the needle on the fuel gauge. Broke more than one needle on those old gauges. Overall happy with how it turned out. Though, I would probably not do it a second time. Also would have gotten a different speedometer, because the one I bought only has a trip...

    Aftermarket gauges in stock cluster

Wiring was something that I spent a good amount of time looking into before I started this project. Ended up buying the shop manuals from 83 on Rockauto and sketched up my own wiring schematic to try to make it easier to understand. I decided that I wanted to keep as much of the original...

    Aftermarket gauges in stock cluster

I got Equus oil pressure, temp, and voltage meters, and decided to get a glowshift tach to fit in the spare spot in the cluster. Figured it would be nice to have a tach since it is a manual. Using these gauges in the stock cluster was light on the wallet, but heavy on the time investment. I...

    Aftermarket gauges in stock cluster

Here are the backs of the two speedometer gauges I have. After spending days/weeks reading forums on getting my speedometer to work and failing. I decided to order a glowshift gps speedometer.

    Aftermarket gauges in stock cluster

I test fit the old aftermarket gauges in my spare cluster, and it seemed like I would be able to make cheap aftermarket gauges work without breaking the bank. I put the cover over and it mostly looked OK. Since the fuel gauge worked on the spare cluster, I took that out and put it in my...

    Aftermarket gauges in stock cluster

This is going to be a long post, so I will break it up a little bit. This past summer I finally got around to fixing my instrument cluster on my 83 K20 because the only one that kind of worked was the fuel gauge that read 1/4 tank at full. My dad owned the truck before me and had mounted a temp...

    fuel gauge reading

Yeah, I had a spare cluster and just took the fuel gauge out of that and plugged it into my cluster and it read the correct fuel level. I should do a post sometime soon on my cluster rebuild with aftermarket gauges shoe horned in.

Need to replace rubber fuel lines on top of both tanks….

My mistake, you are right. I immediately thought about the hose I replaced and didn't think about the others.

Need to replace rubber fuel lines on top of both tanks….

I replaced the hose on my passenger tank without dropping it or removing the bed. I did it in my driveway this summer. Someone had cut a hole in the fill neck hose and it leaked when trying to put gas in. Do yourself a favor and get new hose clamps. I pretty much destroyed the stock clamps...

Building a new motor for my 79 C10 - would love some advice!

Currently have an engine at a machine shop as well, so just went through the process of choosing parts for low end power for towing and daily driving (no racing). Regarding cam shafts, look for something with minimal overlap. They are a bit tough to find, but something close to 114 degrees of...

    roof rust "paint?"

I used Rustoleum rusty metal primer on a pickup box trailer a few years back and it holding up well. I only used the rusty metal primer on the bare metal that was rusty. The whole thing was rattle canned. It's a trailer, so didn't car about show car finish. Just note, it REALLY sticks! I was...

Regearing Advice... What do I need?

Sorry about the long delay. I believe the chart is showing rpm at 65mph without overdrive. I couldn't find the original, just my screenshot I took 9 months ago. The chart is useful if you are changing gears and/or tires to make sure you are getting in the range of what you're intending. When I...

Regearing Advice... What do I need?

I found this chart helpful for decided gears. Ignore the blue circles. That was me calling out the difference in a past text conversation I was having with someone when I re-geared my suburban.

    low oil pressure

I have been doing research and watching videos from The Motor Oil Geek, and I think I am going to start using Mobile 1 European 5w-40 in my 83. The ZDDP package is very similar to pre-1994 10w-30. Today's 10w-30 is capped at 800ppm. 50 weight oil has more ZDDP, but if you go too thick you lose a...

Want to build a good horsepower, good fuel economy engine for a 1978 c20 with stock 350. I don't know much and need help.

Before you get too carried away buying parts to get more "power", you need to determine where you want your power. You expressed the desire to maintain good mpg, which leads me to believe that this is going to be a daily driver and not a race vehicle. Most things people are going to tell you to...

    Door lock is stuck

My 83 (in my profile pic) does the same thing on the driver's side. To say it is in poor condition is giving it too much credit. I cut a big circle opening in the door panel so I can crawl in from the passenger side and reach into the door to unlock the driver's door.

    High hump floor carpet

Do you have a link to where you are looking for new carpets? I am in the middle of a 2wd to 4wd conversion on my suburban and there is a possibility I will need new carpet. Following to hear how this turns out for you!

    86 suburban 2wd to 4wd

I agree and this is exactly why I bought an older suburban. Sold my 2020 Yukon because maintenance and repairs on the thing were ridiculous. Using the money from selling that to work on this. Originally was looking for something 91-93, but couldn't find anything that didn't need a completely new...

The only donuts allowed with that thing is tire spinning. No eating donuts in it! j/k But seriously, don't mess up the interior!
