Thermostat opening and closing to much..

It shouldn't fluctuate like that. It will maintain the temperature the thermostat is rated for. It should be unnoticeable unless you are heavily loading the engine.

Thermostat opening and closing to much..

Could be air bound, but you probably didn't completely drain the engine when you replaced everything. It may be just a bad thermostat.

    Pluses to the pandemic

Nothing better looking than a black short bed Chevy truck. I get complements on my 96 all the time.

    86 C20 SM465 to NV4500 swap

I think the advice adapters #712576 adapter kit is your best option.$418.00 The SM465 has a different bolt pattern to the bell housing. You can also have the stock bellhousing drilled and tapped to accept the NV4500. That would require a smaller centering ring I believe.

    700r4 question

You need to adjust the throttle valve cable correctly or you will burn it up if you continue it drive it like that. Some people call it the kick down cable which is incorrect. It controls the shift points like a modulator on a TH400 only it is done mechanically.

    What is this?

That's the vacuum advice, it should be connected to a vacuum source. The first pic looked like it was going through the frame.

Priming engine oil on a Detroit.

Hey Marty, I wish I had an O'Reilly's close to me, the closest one is an hour away in Stamford Connecticut. All we have here is AutoBlast and Advance. Thanks for the information though.

Priming engine oil on a Detroit.

Thanks for researching this. I'm wondering if it will make enough pressure to get oil through the crank and cam bearings. For the price it is worth a shot. Thank you!

Priming engine oil on a Detroit.

Thanks Ben, I really want to get some oil through this thing before I go trying to fire it up. I'm not sure how long it would take for the oil pump to circulate oil through it. This engine has never been fired since it was rebuilt and has never had any oil in it either. I'll have to rig up some...

Priming engine oil on a Detroit.

Gentlemen, I need to prime the oiling system on my Detroit 4-53, is there an alternative to using a $230.00 OTC 6492 oil priming pump? It would be a one time thing and seems pretty expensive to me. I saw a video of a guy using an Ortho pesticide sprayer to prime an engine. Lol! Any alternative...

    New radiator suggestions?

Most of them are Chinese crap anyway, unless you want to put an aluminum radiator in it. If you have a gas or diesel, get the diesel radiator, it'll never overheat.

    GOV rebuilt 4-53 Detroit?

I am not in possession of it yet, I have to take a drive next week to check it out. I saw a 6-71 run away after it was rebuilt, someone panicked and tried to choke it off with a rag and completely destroyed the blower.

    GOV rebuilt 4-53 Detroit?

Oh Ox you're killing me. Lol! I had to check into the 51 series. The whole blower and exhaust arrangement is different from what I can tell from a couple videos I found on YouTube. The valve cover has two center studs like the old 71's. Good looking out though, thanks!

    GOV rebuilt 4-53 Detroit?

I've seen some 6V swaps in pickups. I guess you have to remove the cab, stuff the engine in the frame and build the truck around it. I don't know about a K5 though.

    GOV rebuilt 4-53 Detroit?

Hey Eric, I agree, they are expensive to rebuild. I guess it is a unicorn. It's old, pre Detroit Diesel. I'm not sure how if the serial number determines year of manufacturer. From what I understand, it would be between 1957 and 1965. I'm not sure what refurbished as apposed to rebuilt means...

Young Broke and Wanna Go Fast

:welcome:I would go with a Performance Goodwrench motor. Be careful with the ponies. As a relatively young driver, 350 hp can get you into trouble. Just a little advice.
