    454 TBI - A couple questions

So I think I got some of the kinks worked out of it. I ended up advancing the timing significantly. This brought back power, got rid of the clicking/ticking and stumbling (which was actually misfiring), and it dropped the temp about 10 degrees (to about 210-215). I flushed the radiator again...

    454 TBI - A couple questions

Just took it for a spin around the block... Temp hoovers around 220. It has very little power under load. And when I try to get on it a little bit, it stumbles and I hear a fairly loud clicking noise. I have no idea what it is, but it is certainly a troubling noise. Thoughts?

    454 TBI - A couple questions

No, i didn't change it during my work. I am going to drive it around the neighborhood tonight and see what it does. I may try to swing by the auto parts store and rent a timing light. Can anyone tell me what the ignition timing is supposed to be set at for these 454s?

    454 TBI - A couple questions

Yeah, if I get on the throttle it backs down a little bit, which tells me the water pump, t-stat, and fan are all working. I am just very leery of it being that warm, especially that quickly. It certainly did not get that warm sitting in the driveway before I replaced the heads. That is...

    454 TBI - A couple questions

Water pump was not replaced when I did the head gaskets. I want to say it was replaced during the motor rebuild, but I can't be sure. Correct me if I am wrong, but the water pump is a mechanical pump that is driven by the drive belt. So as long at the belt is spinning the pulley on the water...

    454 TBI - A couple questions

GT, thanks for the response. I hear what you are saying. However, the rate at which the temp climbs is very alarming to me. There is no reason the temp should be up to 220* sitting in the driveway for 5 minutes. And I turn the truck off at that point. If I leave it on, it continues to climb...

    454 TBI - A couple questions

And to answer your question bucket, i have not driven it yet. But the fan seems to be spinning fine. I also replaced the radiator cap, and that solved the dripping coolant issue.

    454 TBI - A couple questions

Update: Just because I am a worst case scenario thinker, I decided to drain the oil to check for coolant, hoping I didn't have a head gasket leak/blowout. Oil was perfect. I put fresh oil in, a new filter, installed thermostat, 50/50 coolant/water, and buttoned everything back up. Started the...

    454 TBI - A couple questions

Oh, and also, after letting the truck sit in the driveway running for about 10 minutes yesterday (with radiator cap on this time), the temp was up to about 210 -220 again. When i shut the truck off, i started to get a constant water drip out from under the radiator cap due to pressure build-up...

    454 TBI - A couple questions

I replaced the sender last night. After doing so, I started the truck up, and the oil pressure read 60 psi. After i let it warm up for about 5 minutes or more, it eventually (and slowly) settled in to about 30 psi. It seemed to be reading fairly accurately (as far as what I would expect to see)...

    454 TBI - A couple questions

Perfect...i know exactly where it is. I remember seeing it, and thinking that's what it was. Thanks for the help! I'm going to check the wires to the sender and go ahead and replace it. I'll let you know if that fixes it.

    454 TBI - A couple questions

Where is the sender located? I have no doubt that it is possible something (or many things) got hit or bent in the process. There was a lot of crawling around on the engine, legs and arms contorted and placed for balance, as well as a lot of heartache and swearing that went into this job.

    454 TBI - A couple questions

I guess it is possible there is a high pressure oil pump in there. I really don't recall what kind of pressure it was reading before I pulled the heads. I can't say that I remember the gauge pegging out when I bought the truck. And I think that's something I would have paid attention to when I...

    454 TBI - A couple questions

Thanks for the quick response. The reason I ask about the oil pressure is because when i initially start the truck up, the oil pressure gauge pegs out past the operating range (well beyond 60 psi - according to the gauge). After the truck runs for a while, the gauge eventually kicks down and...

    454 TBI - A couple questions

I've been battling a few issues since I got the top end of my motor put back together after having to replace the heads due to burning coolant (ended up being a bad head rebuild job). Long story short, i have replaced the bad heads with new (rebuilt) heads and got the truck running again. It...

    OBD code 34

Fixed it. It was a bad ignition control module. Don't know why it would be bad, the whole distributor (and whole ignition system for that matter) is pretty much new within the last 2,000 miles. But it was definitely the culprit. Swapped in the new ICM and it fired right up.

    OBD code 34

I got the new vacuum lines installed and spliced in the new map sensor connector. I took the truck for a spin and it ran fine. No stumbling or missing during the drive. I got back to the house and turned the truck off. I started it back up to head back out, and when I got the the bottom of...

    OBD code 34

Thanks for the picture and the information. I checked for vacuum leaks last night with a can of carb cleaner and did not find any. I did see that the clip on the plug from the wire harness to the MAP sensor was broken off. I didn't think it would be a big deal because the plug was still...

    OBD code 34

Well a leaking tbi gasket should be fairly easy to identify with a can carb cleaner. And as far as that goes, I guess I could check the vacuum lines that way too. I will give that a try and report back. I hate to just start blindly throwing parts at it. Is there a way to test the MAP sensor...

    OBD code 34

I have been getting intermittent misfires and hesitation/stumbling over the past couple weeks. Problem seems to occur when the SES light is on. The light does not come on all the time...maybe once every 4 or 5 times I start the truck. When the light is off, the motor runs fine, no issues, no...

    brake lights won't go off

What would cause the brakes lights to stay on? My first thought is bad brake light switch. Any suggestions out there? Thanks in advance. 1990 GMC Suburban.
