    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

After months of trying I think I've finally gotten all the exhaust leaks resolved. Took it back to the shop three times for him to fix various pinhole leaks in welds that I found by duct taping my shop vac to the tail pipe. They were legit leaks and he fixed them, but they weren't the source...

    TBI vacuum leak

Yep, I did post it up here a while ago, before I knew there was a vacuum leak. Good thing it didn’t sell!

Mixing bowl air cleaner transition piece for TBI

All I know is I spent $12 on a set of four mixing bowls - I took the second biggest and my wife got the other three so I’m out a few bucks and an hour or two of my time. No biggie if it doesn’t do much for me

No Start - Smoke From TBI

X2 in replacing or rebuilding the distributor. TBI dists are notorious for corrosion problems. Mine was running fine one minute and went to no run at all the next. When I took it apart the pickup coil just crumbled apart.

Mixing bowl air cleaner transition piece for TBI

HyperTech makes something for TBI called the Power Charger. Basically eliminates the "choke ring" that goes around the injectors and provides a support for the air cleaner (and also creates a lot of restriction). Got the idea for a home made one on another site - here's what I did. Bought...

    TBI vacuum leak

Well it still leaked after all that so last night put on the other adapter and did some vacuum line reconfig. Both brake booster and small lines for HVAC controls run from big port on back of manifold now. Put it all together and no leaks. The mystery of the leaking OEM BBC adapter may never...

    TBI vacuum leak

It passed straight edge test with flying colors, no warping at all that I could see. Cleaned up mating surface real nice and bolted it back to manifold with single gasket, dry. Used a torque wrench to get all four bolts torqued same. Had the TB completely off and out of the way (last time I...

    TBI vacuum leak

This is a relatively new build - it’s probably been there since the beginning. A small vacuum leak on TBI is not very noticeable. My idle was occasionally high but other time normal and it didnt hunt - I was diagnosing the odd idle and the bigger more noticeable surging on deceleration when I...

    TBI vacuum leak

I agree. Manifold is spreadbore and has two bolt patterns. A q-jet and the oem adapter use the inside bolt pattern but the eBay adapter uses the outside bolt pattern and I’m not sure how to specify that when trying to buy the bottom gasket. Maybe the gasket for the adapter that @bucket...

    TBI vacuum leak

Thanks. I’ll check for warping with a straightedge tonight. I’m also thinking about a light bead of sensor- and gas-safe silicone in the problem area. Would that work?

    TBI and low MPG advice

Also check for vacuum leaks. I’m running that same adapter between the TB and intake that you have and I’m concerned it’s warped. (check out my vacuum leak post that’s active on the forum now). With everything bolted back up and engine idling, spray carb cleaner around all the gasket sealing...

    Trans cooler lines help

I found upper and lower (engine) oil cooler lines on Amazon for my 91. Typically they're Dorman and not well made - one of mine had a stripped fitting out of the box. However, you may consider an alternative: eliminating the factory oil cooler. I met a guy on a different forum that apparently...

    TBI vacuum leak

Thanks. Yeah, got the adapter out tonight and went over the sealing surface with scotchbrite. Found one nick in that area that caused a tiny raised bump. I wouldn't think that would be the culprit, but I couldn't find anything else. So I actually have a flat plate adapter that I bought off...

    TBI vacuum leak

I’ve discovered a vacuum leak between my TB adapter and intake manifold. I’m using the adapter that came stock on the early TBI big blocks (GM didn’t come up with a TBI specific intake until 91 - before that they just used a q-jet one with this adapter). The OEM gasket at that interface is very...

    tbi harness

Have you joined Gearhead EFI forum yet? You should definitely check it out that site is a wealth of info. One of the main users there is Dave W - he programs/burns custom chips and also builds GM harnesses. His chips are much more tailored for your specific setup than Harris. Harris will ask...

    454 tbi

I know for sure the injectors are the same since I’m using 454 injectors in my SBC TBI.

    454 tbi

Aren’t the injector pods the same between SBC and BBC? If so could just go to pick and pull and pick one up for $15 or so off any old gmt400. I cracked an injector pod not too long ago too - tightening the supply fuel line just a tad too much so I could get my pressure gauge angled right...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Yeah, I've never thought stainless was really worth the extra cost, but didn't know the part about using a TIG weld and purging.

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Dammit - more exhaust leaks. Found two more in my new custom Y-pipe in two different welds. Will be going back to the shop for him to fix up. Can exhaust shops do pressure tests of their work? I found the first one by starting it up cold and running my finger along the welds. I had to get a...

5.7 vortec heads, help deciding on condition and value

Unless you can get them magnafluxed I’d stay away. I’ve bought two sets of used vortecs and I think all but one head had some cracking. They’re notorious for cracking in the exhaust valve seat of the middle cylinders. And knowing it was ran out of oil does not help matters although that may...

14 bolt, Full-floater drum brake squeak?

Thanks. I'm going to try and loosen the e-brake completely just to make sure it's not the culprit. I've had e-brake problems since day one. I actually bought it with no e-brake - PO put in a 14 bolt FF from a '78, but in the early 80s they changed the e-brake cable system drastically. The...

    1996 corvette zip tie special

The zip tie engineering is impressive - some pics are definitely in order. I've always liked C4s, I actually considered buying one instead of a C3, but at the time (18 years ago) they were still generally more expensive. For some inexplicable reason, I like 86-88 TPI the best and I'd even be...

14 bolt, Full-floater drum brake squeak?

Sorry to revive an old thread, but it's mine so hopefully that's kosher. I finally sprung for new drums to hopefully solve the squeaky brake problem - no luck. When replacing, I addressed the issues @chengny describes in the quote. I felt I didn't need to replace the shoes and all hardware...

    TBI to spread-bore manifold adapter

That was my dining room table in college! My roommate and I found it at goodwill probably about 25 years ago! Funny thing is I already had the matching chairs - I grew up with one that my parents had (also gray) and they let me have the chairs. Now it makes a great table for my shop.
