    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Dang, I didn't know there was a difference other than the tall oil filler on the vortecs. I let them go with the old long block when I sold it.

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Thanks! Hoping this Sunday, but not sure. Still have some work in the engine bay - some harness repair and replace a few connectors. Thinking about upgrading the wiring for the headlights at the same time.

Yeah, that makes sense. I wonder if it’s true for the 700R4 and manual trucks too?

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Does anybody know the story with the electronic spark control (ESC) module on the TBI trucks? Discovered last night that my ‘90 parts rig had that module on the bracket that hangs over the PS valve cover that also has the EGR solenoid. My ‘91 did not have that module there and I don’t think it...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Got my plug wire routing figured out tonight. More or less factory routing, near as I can tell. For some reason #2 wire isn’t quite long enough to go thru all the looms but close enough. All the other wires fit perfect. I’m reusing these from the previous engine but they’re MSD 8.5 mm and in...

Sure, but it’s just sitting up there, not sealed or torqued to intake

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Just about ready to drop it in. Lots of fun with brackets and supports these days. Biggest challenge was the throttle cable stop/cruise control bracket. Had to do some minor fabrication with aluminum. Another challenge was MAP sensor mounting. I ended up attaching it to the bracket over the...

color poll for 1st gen f body

My vote is definitely royal plum, I think I’d be voting for it even if it wasn’t the factory color. I had no idea that was an option for Camaros. ‘67 only or was there purple in 68 and 69? When I bought my 76 vette 17 years ago it was a badly oxidized light blue - with RED interior. PO...

    454 injectors to 350 tbi ?

80 lbs injectors are too much for a stock 350 with stock TB. im building a vortec 383 with bored 46mm TB and my tuner guy (Old School EFI/Dave W. On Gearhead-EFI ) insists that 80 lbs is too much even for this set up. He had me buy 74 lbs 454 injectors. Don’t have it running yet, but I’m...

That’s great to know that’s available. I’m first going to try using what I have but this might be an option if it doesn’t work out. Thanks

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Yeah I’m going to be doing some bending for sure, thanks. I think I’ll be able to make it work for throttle cable at least. Cruise diaphragm will be biggest challenge - if it’s too much of a hassle I’ll just forego CC, doesn’t work now anyway (I think diaphragm is bad). I’m going to use some...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Damn, there are a lot of challenges with a vortec head TBI motor. All the stuff that bolted to the intake manifold needs to find a new home since bolt holes in q-jet/vortec manifold are missing or in a different place. Not so bad with coil and map sensor (shown) since position is not as...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

I used one of those levelers when I installed the engine in my Vette - very nice, made it much easier. It was one that bolted to the intake manifold. But alas, haven't had much contact with the guy that let me borrow it years ago... And, no, my ram is not pneumatic, just good old jacking...

    NP 241 Rebuild needed?

Cool. Well I’ll replace the trans mount and adjust the linkage and keep my fingers crossed! thanks

    NP 241 Rebuild needed?

Hmmm, the trans mount IS bad, there’s a crack in it and new one on order. Maybe that’s the problem? It sure would be nice to not have to crack that thing open! Thanks for the input Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    NP 241 Rebuild needed?

My NP 241 will fall out of 4-Hi. I’ll be driving along in 4wd in snow and all of a sudden I’ll lose traction and realize it’s back in 2 hi. I think there are some plastic bushings on the shift forks that may be the culprit? Does this mean full rebuild? I have the t-case out now so it’s...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Finally getting going on installing the 383! Spent a good chunk of last weekend readying the stocker for removal and then last Wed the buyer came and helped me get it out the rest of the way. Sold for $500, pretty pleased. Will help defer cost of some new bolt-ons and TBI chip burning/tuning.

    81 Suburban

Were FF an option on 3/4 tons after '80? I've wondered about this for a while. Seems like I've seen plenty of later ones that had FF, but I know the majority are SF. Same for 3/4 ton pickups too? My '91 has a FF, but that's because the PO swapped axles from a '77 3/4 ton.

Hole in my floor for fuel pump

I used a Walbro 190 and I bought it direct from them, per some advice I got on this site. They're well aware of the Chinese knock-off issue and will oftentimes price match with Amazon or similar. I usually much prefer to do things the "right" way, but with a carpeted burb I didn't really...

How to tell roller cam or not

x2 (or 3 or 4 or whatever) on roller cam all the way. No break-in worries, no $10/quart oil, cam and lifters last WAYYYY longer, can change individual parts, etc. etc. I bought a $300 vortec roller motor core. Plan was to use entire valve train AND both heads, but only one head was usable...

Hole in my floor for fuel pump

Here's what I did. The square of angle iron makes the floor panel rock solid and it's flush with the existing bed. Hardest part is locating the hole. I wish I would have made the front cut an inch or so further towards the front - makes it a little challenging to get to the fuel line...

https://portland.craigslist.org/clc/cto/d/1974-chevy-cheyenne-super-20/6385605610.html Rust not too bad for a '74. Paint job reminds me of a tonka truck I had when I was a kid. It was based off a mid 70's square - had a trailer and farm animals for it. I think it was a single cab though, not...

    burb rear window defroster re-solder

Here's a pic. Hard to see, but it broke off right where the braided cable attaches to the bottom of the window. I think you can see the solder puddle in the pic. Looks like I have to remove the window to do this repair. Damn. That thing sucks to remove. (The yellow wire nut is just in case...
