Possibly vapor lock. The truck sat and the intake/carb was hot and without pressure or cooling so fuel vaporized. Would be my first thought. The pop may have been a lean backfire.- Swearbody

Ok yeah you got me. The sbc was introduced in 55 but the 350 not til 67-8. I dont know what I was thinking...well yeah I do. I thought sbc and just went to 55,LOL- Swearbody

Mechanical advance has nothing to do with vacuum. It works off the springs and centrifugal force of the weights and rpm.- Swearbody

Only thing I would add is to find your true tdc before timing. Ive ran into instances where lining up the marks still wasnt true tdc.- Swearbody

Engine Mount Bolts (The ones that bolt to the frame)
When I removed mine(just put back two weeks ago) the bolts had washers but no lock washers- Swearbody

1985 engine swap how do I know what fits?
Almost Any 350 from 1955-1996ish will "fit". Some are better than others as far as robustness and power production. The 80's were a hodge podge of emissions and electronic carburation so youll probably need to keep some of the original parts to make the swap work unless you find an exact...- Swearbody

Fiberglass hood
Buddy ive been on this one for years... I want a fibre/poly/aluminum hood for mine so I can go "pin on" style. All for the ease of removal when working in the engine bay. If I could afford to I would have a carbon fiber uni body made and go full Pikes Peak with the Square.- Swearbody

What new tools have you got lately?
got a stethoscope to track down some ticks and taps. Didn't really find any answers with it but it does as advertised. Still feel like I should have purchased the cheapest one I could find(7.99) vs (20) for the Lisle -
Anyone have any leads on those 3/4 14 bolt axles for 200 bucks for a set?

Only reason I didnt do that and make it easy on myself is cause I already had the exhaust kit for the 73-87 on hand and thought id make it with that. I am kinda happy I did since it tucks so nicely under and around so as to have very little hanging below the mufflers. I really wantrd to do pass... -

When I went to time mine I kept getting readings indicating my timing was too far retarded when it was running well. When i would try to correct it would instantly die. I timed it by ear and eye and runs like a scalded dog. Im thinking my timing indicator got put back one set of bolts too low... -

I agree. Honestly them being pointed up is a condition of me not being a good fabricator. I did it all by eye and then held it with my hands to tack it up off the truck. It should and is supposed to be pointed down slightly and a little higher up to boot. Im gonna cut some out when I install... -

Hood installation and line-up
So its time to put the hood back on the GMC. Last time I did this It did not line up as well as I would like. I am looking for advice on how to align everything during install. -

Indeed. Stainless does contract and expand at different rates then mild steel. This could cause a weld done on the face of a 2d plane to "pop off" so to speak. The fill material that binds will contract out of the "pocket" and dislodge when using resistance welders due to the metals not heating... -

Got my exhaust welded up today. Never joined stainless to mild steel before. I dont get the hype...seemed easy enough. I didnt even change settings between mild/mild and stnl/mild. I know the welds dont look good but hey...neither do my other welds,LOL -

Say...at least its a square body, right! LOL The problem with wanting a duckbill, visor, fender flares , roll pan and bumper valance is that a real body shop that does that kind of custom work is getting hard to find; and when you do be prepared to pay more than im willing. Ill probably never... -
