What have you done to your square lately??

+1, those valve covers are real purdy. Of course, since they don't say "GMC" they're dead to me.

    So sick of aftermarket parts

Good idea to replace it too. But it's not on the "intake" side of things so if it's leaking air, it's not causing a lean run condition..........the PCV valve is the control for that crankcase vapor "leak" into the manifold.

    Windshield installation?

I pay to them done, because once you break one windshield, you haven't saved any money. As a buddy used to say, "You're chasing a nickel with a dollar." I had a new windshield installed last year. My gawd, is there anything nicer than a new windshield? Anyway, the glass guys put the gasket...

    So sick of aftermarket parts

@hoots......That's fantastic that the coil and ICM got you back running smooth again. But what a PIA to have to go through all that. @chaz.........yes, that new ACDelco PCV will cure the problem. Get a new grommet at the same time if yours is baked hard (mine was). My new coil arrived today...

    So sick of aftermarket parts

For future reference, bring a can of starting fluid with you. When it dies, give it a blast of starting fluid. If it fires right up, that indicates it wasn't getting fuel, and your starting fluid provide "fuel." If it doesn't fire up, you know you have a spark issue. At least with that quick...

What have you done to your square lately??

Ordered an OEM ignition key lock cylinder this week, along with a pair of GM black rubber keys. Put that in this afternoon and finally have an ignition lock that functions. Expected to have the TBI rebuilt kit, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and fuel pressure gauge by today, but the...

    oil burn

I've done the rope down the cylinder trick often. Feed the rope in to the cylinder, and then rotate the crankshaft so the piston crushes the rope against the valves. Works great. I've used the air method as well, but there are a couple problems with it: 1) you have to have a continuous...

tbi issues, on my 88 gmt400

Since this is your rebuild, are you sure you have the cam timed to the crank correctly and not a tooth off? Are you sure you have all the plug wires on in the correct order and locations? Have you ever replaced the IAC (Idle Air Control valve) on the right rear side of the TBI? Any chance you...

    oil burn

You don't want to rebuild heads on a tired engine. Making the valves seal perfectly tight against the valve seats will create increase cylinder pressures which the tired rings in the worn bores won't be able to withstand, and it'll burn oil like crazy. Smoke on start-up is typically valve stem...

Any downside to modding the throttle body?

Thank you sir! Quote: How to read the codes: Ground terminals A and B (see diagram below) with the ignition "ON" and engine not running. The system will enter the diagnostic mode. In this mode, the computer will display a Code 12, three consecutive times, by flashing the "CHECK ENGINE"...

Any downside to modding the throttle body?

Thanks! Wasn't there a sticky about how to get and read the codes w/o a scanner. I can't find it for the life of me.

RETRO-MOD: replace standard antenna mast with wind noise reducing mast

Did this mod back in about '04/'05, including the rectangular base......all new from the dealer. Worth spending some $$ on. Now if there was a glue-in windshield option that did away with that fat, wind noise generating gasket.

Any downside to modding the throttle body?

Yeah the local NAPA has "theirs" (didn't ask brand because I was trying to find AC) for $38ish and I've got a shopping cart on RockAuto with the one you found, plus an AC ignition switch (mine rotates w/o the key) and a couple other parts. Can you explain the IAC test better? You mention...

Any downside to modding the throttle body?

Thanks. Wasn't sure how the CTS worked. On the German stuff, the CTS controls how much fuel is delivered during warm-up, until say, 180*F, at which point it's no longer really doing anything other than saying, "The coolant is above X temp, so start listening to the o2 sensor from now on." Is...

Any downside to modding the throttle body?

Mmm....no, I've never even heard of doing that. That would suck to have a perforated/cracked underside. But it ran like this with the stock manifold on it too, so I'm thinking this Edelbrock is okay. Re; the pod spacer. Are you saying it's worth doing, or that it might cause an issue? Is...

Any downside to modding the throttle body?

Getting in the mood to "rebuild" the throttle body. I've seen the mods of: -removing the raised "rim" from around each of the venturi's -install an adjustable fuel pressure regulator -install a fuel pressure gauge at the TB -install a spacer block between the injector pod housing and the TB...

    So sick of aftermarket parts

I'd only posted about the weird dying last week, or maybe the week before, but hadn't mentioned the MSD coil. I'm not used to seeing coils fail. It's so rare on the German stuff that I've worked on, that I can almost say it "never" happens. When I have seen a coil fail, it's been in a way...

    So sick of aftermarket parts

As a long time German car tech, I'm a hardcore believer in only using OE and OEM parts. To the point of; I refuse to use anything else unless it's from a tried and true German company. I let down my guard on the 'burb thinking that I could get some sort of good quality "American" parts via...

    So sick of aftermarket parts

Been having a little issue with the engine dying randomly, then not restart, and then for no apparent reason, it'll fire back up and run perfect, and not die again for days, or maybe weeks, or even months. The 'burb isn't our DD, so duplicating the situation with enough regularity that it would...

What have you done to your square lately??

A bit of interior work today... -Replaced the AM/FM tuner in the Delco 5EQ CD/Stereo with a version that's been set up for MP3 link. -Pulled the ceiling console and replaced the dome light bulbs and cleaned the lenses for them, and the 4 "map" lights.

    PCV valve chatters at idle

Ya, no sh!t. This OEM valve was $5.63. The days of any sort of quality in the aftermarket are loooooong gone and I need to embrace that. I actually know better, but figured, 'how could you F up a PCV valve.

    PCV valve chatters at idle

I replaced what was probably the original PCV valve because it had lost it's check-valve/one-way function. Installed a new one (supposedly for my application) from NAPA. It chatters at idle. I don't recall if the old one did this or not. Did I get a POS valve, is this normal for...

    91 4L80E Pull - What do I need?

Any chance it still has the extra long radiator, fan shroud, mount brackets, etc.? Would love to stuff one of those into my 'burb.

    Manual Torque Convertor Lock-up 700r4

My '90 locks in 3rd and 4th, and I swear it feels like it does it in 2nd too when I'm towing. I know that's not possible though. Maybe it's doing some sort of "coasting" mod on the sprags when I let up on the gas, and then hooks up again when I put my foot back? Like when I let up a little on...
